By

The lovely looking outdoor area and pool of the Devon Hotel in New Plymouth, one of the best hotels in New Plymouth.

A favourite for many, the western city of New Plymouth is packed full of exciting things to do (and delicious things to eat), so you’re definitely going to need at least a weekend there, if not longer.

Luckily, there are a whole lot of great places to stay too. From renowned luxury chains to characterful boutique abodes, we scoured the local hotel scene to find a range of gems worthy of your booking.

Here are nine of the best hotels in New Plymouth.

Millennium Hotel New Plymouth

Egmont Street

A continental breakfast buffet punctuated with pastries at the Millenium Hotel, one of the best hotels in New Plymouth. Coming in hot and sitting pretty on the waterfront (with its own 24-hour room service to boot) is Millennium Hotel New Plymouth.

Chances are you’re familiar with the Millenium name already—they’re an international hotel chain that’s been bringing the classic luxe for aeons.

Snag a studio or suite room here and you can flaunt access to your very own fridge, microwave and tea-making facilities, then frolic over the road to the Coastal Walkway and take a selfie with the famed Wind Wand. Now, that’s luxury.

The State Hotel

Devon Street East

A glimpse of plush lounge at The State Hotel, one of New Plymouth’s best hotels. If boutique is more your vibe, you’ll do well to check into The State Hotel. With just 15 rooms, this spot is less mainstream luxe with more of a character aesthetic.

Rooms are nevertheless equipped with all the accoutrements you’d expect of a hotel—private bathroom, free toiletries, kitchenette—and there’s a fitness centre and bar on-site, for that perfect balance between doing the mahi and getting the treats.

Just five minutes from the Coastal Walkway and a 15-minute drive from the airport, it’s in a great location too.

The Devon Hotel New Plymouth

Devon Street East

A large turquoise pool at The Devon Hotel, one of the best hotels in New Plymouth. Smack bang in the centre of the action—500 metres from the coast and the Len Lye Centre—The Devon Hotel had us at 24-hour room service, which just so happens to be our number one when it comes to New Plymouth hotels.

Making the deal even sweeter, they deliver on our second favourite thing about hotels too—a buffet that’s chocka with local produce. Food aside (we can’t believe we just wrote that), The Devon Hotel boasts an outdoor swimming pool, free parking, a fitness centre and a bar. Sorted.

Novotel New Plymouth Taranaki

Hobson X Leach Streets

A large plush seating area at Novotel New Plymouth, one of the best hotels in New Plymouth. If a vital element of your dream getaway is a large bathtub to soak in (ideally with a Lush bath bomb), you’re in luck—rooms at Novotel New Plymouth Taranaki have a gorgeous bath to stretch out in, so you can revel in those mermaid moments.

Ticking the breakfast buffet box, and equipped with a fridge, mini-bar, TV, and on-site bistro, bar and fitness centre, this spot’s a worthy contender for best hotels in New Plymouth. Order an airport shuttle so you can live the good life as soon as you touch down.

King And Queen Hotel Suites

King X Queen Streets

A cosy bedroom that looks out onto a bathroom.Somewhere between an apartment and a hotel, King And Queen Hotel Suites feel like you’ve scored a weekend at your rich aunt and uncle’s boujee flat while they’re out of town.

Centrally located with all the best of the city at your fingertips, this is hands down, one of the best hotels in New Plymouth. As for amenities, there’s a restaurant, bar and fitness centre, airport shuttle service and—get this—a spa and wellness centre too.

On top of all that, every guest gets a free gym pass to nearby Jetts Gym which will keep gym bunnies very, very happy.

Distinction New Plymouth

Powderham Street

A large white bed, perfect for bouncing on, at Distinction New Plymouth, one of the best hotels in New Plymouth. This spot makes our list because they’ve got a shub (for the uninitiated, a shub is a glorious creation that’s both a shower and a bathtub) like you’ve never before experienced—this shub is also a spa bath. Yesiree, this is not a drill.

Okay, so that’s not the only reason Distinction New Plymouth is one of the best hotels in New Plymouth. It’s complete with a bunch of key hotel trimmings, like an on-site fitness centre and restaurant, and free parking, plus, it’s an easy stroll from local sites like Richmond Cottage, Puke Ariki and Real Tart Gallery. Legit.

Plymouth International

Courtenay X Leach Streets

A T-shaped swimming pool at Plymouth International, one of the best hotels in New Plymouth. Weighing in on the best hotel in New Plymouth with a spa bath is Plymouth International—not only do they have a poolside spa, but each suite packs a double spa bath. We’ll say that again: a double spa bath. Yep, there’s some serious spa rivalry happening in New Plymouth, and we’re here for it.

In addition to all the usual hotel amenities, these rooms come with a large wooden desk too, making this hotel ideal for the digital nomad or people who love piling their stuff on desks.

A hop, skip and a jump from Fitzroy Beach and Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, this hotel’s yet another great choice for central city digs.

Nice Hotel

Brougham Street

An inviting bedroom at Nice Hotel, one of the best hotels in New Plymouth. For something that’s a little bit different, book into Nice Hotel. A far cry from the usual bland palette of a hotel, Nice isn’t afraid to get a little cheeky in its homage to its 1870s roots with a bold retro aesthetic (complete with an iPod dock for added authenticity).

Don’t make the mistake of thinking you’ll miss out on all the modern luxuries though, rooms at Nice Hotel include a minibar, work desk, free parking and tea and coffee-making facilities, and the on-site Table Restaurant is award-winning. Celeriac root pâté with rhubarb jelly on toasted ciabatta anyone?

The Ōkato

South Road, Ōkato

A minimalist bedroom with sleek wooden floors at The Ōkato, one of the best hotels near New Plymouth. A little outside of New Plymouth CBD—27 kilometres to be exact—The Ōkato proves that a wooden, monochrome palette is anything but boring.

The minimalist décor and polished wooden floors create a calming effect, making this hotel a welcome place to return home to after a day spent adventuring. Rooms include a TV, and private bathroom and some feature a view of Mt Taranaki—definitely book this, it’s an absolute treat to wake up to.

You’re covered on the food front too, with their on-site restaurant, Trencherman, which features local beef, seafood and produce alongside classic cocktails.

Now your digs are sorted, discover the best things to do while you're in New Plymouth.
