PSA: Auckland Foodies This Is The One Food Festival You Can't Miss

Listen up, foodies! If you reckon you’ve tried everything there is to eat and drink in Auckland and you’re looking for something new, we’ve found the perfect event for you—Visa Wellington On a Plate. It’s basically a food lovers dream come true—we’re talking a region-wide celebration of all things edible (sign us up!).

Spanning multiple days, locations and cuisines (so the entire crew is looked after) from August 10-26, prepare your bellies for 17 days and three weekends filled with every delicious food and drink under the sun. Expect everything from burgers and beers, right through to the finest of fine dining, Visa Wellington On a Plate will tickle your taste buds no matter what you’re into.

ICYMI, this event has been going strong for one delicious decade now and in 2018 they’re celebrating with a fancy new Visa Festival Hub. Think of this as your go-to spot for special events complete with a Mad Hatter’s tea party, burgers and info sessions on trending topics. With so many awesome events to choose from we’ve done you all a solid and rounded up the best of the best that you can still grab a ticket to, because we love you guys.

Here are our top picks for this year’s Visa Wellington On a Plate.

Hot For Chicken Pop Up

We can’t say no to a little bit (or a lot) of fried chicken so we’re super pumped for the Hot for Chicken pop up. PSA fam, Welly’s the new home of some of the world’s best wings Aussie fried chicken fiends Belles Hot Chicken crossing the ditch with the fried goods. For one night only they’ll be joined by local legends Shepherd, Garage Project and Wine Diamonds for the night of finger-lickin’, lip-smackin’ chicken dreams.

Mr & Ms G’s Are Coming To Wellington IRL

Okay, guys, this is huge. For anyone who’s has Sydney’s Mr Wong and Ms G’s on their bucket list, now’s your chance to save on airfare while still getting your hands on the goods. Chefs Dan Hong(Mr Wong) and Matt Swinhoe (Ms G’s) are joining the award-winning crew at Wellington’s Mr Go’s much to the excitement of our taste buds. So if you’re into all foods Asian and innovative, pencil Mr & Ms G's in the dairy STAT as this six-course feast at the Visa Festival Hub is on for two nights only this August. Secure your tickets here.

Gate To Plate Pop Up

Think lunchboxes with a twist, prepared by prisoners. Yep, we’re serious. There is some serious culinary talent hiding at Rimutaka Prison and chef Martin Bosley is bringing it to our plates. The Gate to Plate Pop Up is a gourmet takeaway lunch that’s set to change the way you think and curb your mighty hunger all at once.

Welcome to Valhalla

We don’t know about you, but after seeing the blokes from the ‘Vikings’ show on telly we’re ready to try whatever diet they’re following. This August you might just get your chance at Visa Wellington On a Plate’s Welcome to Valhalla event. Think tables piled high with a bounty of rustic dishes, whole fish, goblets of wine and tankards of mead. Tuck into that and you’ll be looking like Thor in no time.

United Dumplings: Dumplings Around the Globe

For the hands-on foodie, there are a plethora of cool cooking classes planned for this year’s event and we’re particularly psyched for United Dumplings. Think three different dumplings from three different cultures and your crew learning to fold like a boss under the dumpling experts, House of Dumplings. The best part? Washing down your hard work with a beer or vino afterwards.

That ’70s Dinner Party

If you peaked in the ’70s (you know who you are) or wish you had, boogie on down to That ’70s Dinner Party with stroganoff, Swedish meatballs and, our personal favourite (and ’70s dinner party classic), fondue. Dipping bread into a pot of boiling cheese could quite possibly be the brightest idea of the era and we’re ready for it to make a comeback. Dress up not required, but definitely encouraged.

Don’t worry vegan foodie friends, we haven’t forgotten you. Wellington hospo institution Chow is going entirely vegan for a day with their #ChowVeganTakeover. This August, enjoy vegan spins on their most-loved classics as well as fresh new options guaranteed to delight herbivores and omnivores alike. Even their famous $25 lunch menu is being reinvented, so head on down and get amongst.

All that eating is thirsty work, and what better place to quench it than Beervana? Get your hands on special one-off brews from around the country and the globe, check out crazy brewery displays and sample some pretty imaginative beer concoctions. This is a food festival, so naturally, there will be plenty of tasty food options to help soak up all that booze.

Degustacion de Agua

Okay, this event is low-key blowing our mind and we’re pretty sure you’ll feel the same way. If your Spanish isn’t quite up to scratch, let us translate—this is a water degustation. Reckon you’ve mastered the art of beer, wine and whisky tasting? This one might just have you stumped. See if your taste buds are as discerning as you think they are at Degustacion de Agua. Sip on water from Petone, Waikanae, Whakatane, Samoa, France and the Avida kitchen tap and learn to appreciate the unique flavour profiles of all these different waters. Added bonus: you’ll finish off with lunch and a cheeky vino.
