The Verdict

Family in town and wanna show them a good time? May we suggest Wynyard Grill by Johnny Barr’s. This lively lil' spot in Wynyard Quarter is a real crowdpleaser and will have the convo flowing—and the smiles going—in no time flat with their live jazz nights, in-house magician and more.

The food here is solid and meat-lovers in particular will be champing at the bit to try out their list of local steaks, including the lush chateaubriand variety (which, btw, could be even better than eye fillet). Choose your sauce and a couple of sides to go with—we're big fans of the truffle fries and wilted kale—and you've got yourself a feast fit for a king.

Wynyard Grill is also a great spot for game-based grub (think rabbit, pheasant and even wapiti—a red deer/elk hybrid) as well as some rather tasty mac 'n' cheese, which you may have read about in our 'best of' list. Available in three mouthwatering flavours including our fave—brie and chives—you've simply gotta try it.

You'll of course want something to wash down all of that tasty food, so be sure to peruse their impressive wine list (or if you're after something lighter, they also do some lovely mocktails).

Finally, this place gets big brownie points for service—if you don't leave here with a smile on your face, we'll eat our metaphorical hat!
