Diner En Blanc Is Returning To Sydney At A Secret Location

By Ange Law

Crowds dressed in white at Diner en Blanc on Bondi Beach.

Diner en Blanc is one of the most extravagant and exciting events on Sydney’s foodie social calendar and that isn’t even an exaggeration.

In case you aren’t yet in the know, Diner en Blanc launched in Paris in 1988, and what started as an intimate picnic in Paris has grown into an international phenomenon, now celebrated in 70 cities and 25 countries each year.

The best part is that the location is a secret and even though hundreds of people attend each year (with the exception of last year, of course), the integrity of the event relies on it. One year it was on Bondi Beach and another, on the steps of the Opera House. How does this happen? Well, you need to bring all of your own gear. We’re talking tables, chairs, cutlery, and even a garbage bag, because nobody wants to deal with that mess afterwards.

Secondly, and most importantly, the dress code is strictly elegant and all white. That includes your table settings and cutlery too.

Champagne and wine are the main affair here, as beer and hard liquor are prohibited (note: this is no BYO showdown). To ensure the secret location remains secret until the last minute, you'll be directed to meet at an assigned departure location and escorted to the secret spot by a Diner en Blanc volunteer.
