From sloppy kisses and post-walk cuddles to the heartwarming pitter-patter of their paws along the corridor, there is so much to love about welcoming a doggo into the fam.

But for newbies to the pet-owning game, the unknown can be scary, especially when those pesky parasites, such as paralysis ticks and fleas, are out and about in full force.

While they’re hazardous for humans, a paralysis tick can be deadly for our furry friends, taking the title of the most dangerous tick for dogs in Australia. Because of this, implementing some quick and easy tactics to keep these nasty suckers at bay is never a bad idea.

From choosing long-lasting flea and paralysis tick protection to giving your pooch some T.L.C, we asked the owners of our Urban List dogs to share their best dog care tips and tricks when it comes to avoiding unexpected vet visits and keeping their furry companions safe.

Renee And Lucy

woman and dog in sun"On that glorious day you bring your new friend home, remember that they’re creatures of habit (literally) so start the routine you wish to continue. If they’re snuggled up on your pillow at bedtime on night one, you’re likely to expect a lifelong bed buddy from then on… Lucy taught us that the hard way.

A more positive routine we have started is getting our vet to give Lucy the new year-long flea and paralysis tick treatment. This treatment requires just one easy dose and keeps Lucy safe year-round. As a nervous puppy parent, this has been game-changing in easing my mind and allowing her to make the most of time spent outside.”

Nose To Toes—Bestie And Bailee

girl and dog, south australia

"Bailee is a big lover of bush walks (and runs) through Sydney’s Centennial Park—as a working dog, she’s happiest when playing in wide open grasslands. While it gets a big paw high-five from Bailee, I know this environment can bring paralysis ticks and fleas, especially as the weather gets more humid. Luckily, Bailee’s a big cuddler at home so I use any snuggling opportunity with her to run my hand along her fur and make sure there’s nothing there that shouldn’t be.

Since we also love a good coastal road trip at every chance we get, keeping on top of Bailee’s tick and flea treatments means we can pack the 4WD without any second thought, knowing that Bailee is well protected and free to explore new surroundings."

Did Someone Say Treat?—Sal And Iggy

"Since we first got Iggy Pup we implemented a bit of a treat system where if he is a good boy and sits still during occasions like his vaccinations or parasite treatments then we reward him with one of his favourite treats. A sucker for anything he can gnaw on, this makes those more difficult tasks so much easier and he loves us all the more for it.”

Take It Slow—Andi And Chunk

"When I’m out walking my dog Chunky, I’ve learned to embrace the art of the slow stroll. At first, I’d get a bit impatient when he’d stop to sniff every little thing, but now I get it—it’s his way of taking in the world and my way to take a moment to appreciate our time together. Previously known to love a roll around in some long grass, I make sure to keep him on the lead when we are in amongst bushy terrain. This is my hot tip to keep Chunky away from places where fleas and paralysis ticks hide.”

Implementing these quick and easy pet-parenting and flea and tick prevention tips from our dog-obsessed Urban List crew is a surefire way to ensure you protect not just your pet's health but your own health and your home.

To save yourself from seeing your puppy in pain ask your vet for the longest-lasting flea and paralysis tick protection they have available. Using a long-lasting product gives you peace of mind and endless worry-free outdoor adventures.
