Teeming with places to feast and explore, Western Australia is a true playground for the senses, so it’s no wonder EverNow, a five-night festival of sound, light and fire is an electrifying addition to the already vibrant state.
The brand-new festival is a collaboration between Tourism Western Australia and Perth Festival Special Projects and will feature a trio of free and curious nocturnal experiences to uncover. Running from Wednesday, 4 October to Sunday, 8 October during the season of Kambarang in the Noongar calendar, the event will be filled with everything from major spectacles to intimate moments for the senses.
With so many opportunities to explore the rebirth and renewal of nature during Kambarang, here is our list of unmissable events.
Fire Gardens
Government House Gardens will be transformed into a fiery wonderland, set alight by international flame experts Compagnie Carabosse. Inspired by conversations with Noongar Elders and Noongar custodian Mitchella ‘Waljin’ Hutchins, you’ll enter through an archway of flames and wander to uncover sculptural fire installations that spin, flicker and cascade around you. A feast for the senses, the free Fire Gardens spectacle will also feature specially composed music by French musician Kham Meslien.
Song Circle
From 5pm to 10pm across five nights, celebrate Noongar song and language in the round with Song Circle at the Supreme Court Gardens. Enjoy a 360-degree production as performers sing, dance and play instruments on a revolving stage surrounded by sand. Learn from Noongar artists as they deliver thought-provoking songs about nature in language and share stories through various sculptures by Sharyn Egan peppered throughout the iconic gardens. Meet friends and witness wonderful performances while enjoying a bite to eat from nearby food trucks. It’s bound to be an enchanting and entertaining affair.
Boorna Waanginy —The Trees Speak
Stand beneath the canopy of Kings Park’s iconic trees as they are transformed into an illuminated moving canvas for Boorna Waanginy —The Trees Speak. Watch the six seasons of the Noongar calendar and their stories come alive as they’re projected and animated onto the trees with accompanying soundscapes and lighting effects. Adapted since its 2017 and 2019 run with Perth Festival, expect to be blown away with new projections and stories that speak to the Noongar season of Kambarang. Don’t miss the breathtaking exploration that will leave visitors appreciating the beauty and preciousness of south-west Australia’s natural landscape. This artistic showcase is certainly one to catch.
