Newtown’s eclectic, vibing South King Street is the new official home of Melbourne-based craft brewing legends, Mountain Goat.
In their first venture outside of Victoria, the Goats have taken over an old furniture warehouse and decked it out to create what we think is one of the most unique watering holes in Sydney. They’re the latest brewery to join the Inner West’s craft beer “Ale Trail”, and the brew pub is a most welcome stop for thirsty Sydneysiders.
Inside the venue’s open, naturally lit, and industrial-feel space, 12 taps are pouring fresh core range Mountain Goat beers, like the classic Steam Ale, as well as a bunch of seasonals and experimental brews. We recommend ordering a schooner of “Newtopia”, a delicious hazy pale ale, and a nod to the suburb the brewery now calls home.
If you’re not a beer drinker, their wine list is entirely made up of independent Aussie natural wines. Cocktails are also on the menu, all of which include Mountain Goat’s very own (and insanely good) hopped gin. Oh, and because it’s a brewery, after all, their “Hop Hop Hooray” cocktail even includes a topping up of Mountain Goat IPA.
The menu will also exceed your usual food truck brewery expectations, with tonnes of Newtown-friendly vego options and a huge range of gourmet pizzas and burgers, poutine, a cheesy chicken schnitzel, gnocchi, and salads.
The venue is surprisingly spacious for somewhere slotted into King Street’s tight outfit of shops and can sit up to 155 at full (unrestricted, non-COVID) capacity. Those seats are specifically laid out around the venue’s 12-hectolitre brewing system, giving all those drinking a full view of the process. If you make your way into the beer garden at the back, you’ll also find a cool little veggie and fruit garden with ingredients that may just end up in your tasting paddle.
When you head in, there’s a good chance you could recognise a few friendly faces pouring your beers, with a lot of the brew pub’s staff coming over from local Newtown joints and helping the venue find its feet in our unique and vibrant Inner West.
The newest kid on the block hits the mark in every way and is a high risk of becoming your new favourite place to relax with mates and enjoy a cold beer fresh out of the tank.
The Mountain Goat brewpub is open Monday through Saturday from 10am – midnight, and Sundays 10am –10pm. More details are here.
