Western Sydney artists and grassroots arts groups could soon access a fresh pool of funding designed to help get new projects off the ground.

A new $200,000 Creative Western Sydney Micro Grants Program has been launched, offering funding to independent artists, creative collectives and small arts organisations across the region.

The initiative is aimed at backing local creative practice at a grassroots level—with support for everything from experimental new work to community-led projects and creative collaborations.

Here’s what you need to know.

What The New Creative Western Sydney Grants Fund

The new program will distribute micro grants between $3,000 and $10,000 to support locally led creative projects across multiple artforms.

Funding can support things like:

  • New creative works and experimental projects
  • Community arts initiatives
  • Collaborations and presentations
  • Development opportunities for emerging artists

There’s also a strong focus on supporting projects that increase participation and representation across diverse communities, including First Nations artists, young people, d/Deaf and disabled creatives, and culturally diverse communities.

Who Can Apply For The Micro Grants

The program is open to applicants with a physical presence in one of Western Sydney’s 13 local government areas.

Funding tiers include:

  • $3,000 to $5,000 for individual artists and collectives
  • $5,000 to $10,000 for organisations

Supported projects will take place between 1 July 2026 and 30 June 2027, with applications currently open and closing 28 April 2026.

An online information session is also scheduled for late March for those wanting guidance before applying.

How Much Funding Is Available For Artists

In total, $200,000 has been allocated to the program, delivered through a partnership between Create NSW and the Western Sydney Arts Alliance.

While the grants are relatively small by design, the idea is to make funding more accessible at an early stage—particularly for independent practitioners and smaller organisations that often struggle to access larger-scale funding rounds.

It also forms part of the broader Plan for Western Sydney Arts, Culture and Creative Industries 2025–2028, which is focused on strengthening the region’s cultural infrastructure.

Why Western Sydney’s Creative Sector Is Getting A Boost

Western Sydney has long been one of the country’s most dynamic creative regions, but smaller-scale arts practice often operates with limited support.

This program is intended to help grow opportunities from the ground up—supporting experimentation, local audiences and creative careers, while reinforcing the role arts and culture play in community life.

For artists sitting on a project idea, it could be a timely chance to get it moving.
