North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club is finally moving forward with a long-awaited rebuild.

The NSW Government has committed $10 million towards a brand-new surf club, giving Sutherland Shire Council the funding needed to progress the redevelopment after years of construction setbacks. The project will deliver a modern home for volunteer lifesavers, upgraded community facilities and a new beachfront hub designed to serve Cronulla for decades to come.

What's Included In The New North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club?

The redevelopment will replace the existing surf club with a modern, purpose-built facility designed to better support both volunteer lifesavers and the wider community.

While final designs are still being developed, the new building is expected to include:

• Modern surf lifesaving facilities
• Public amenities
• Council lifeguard facilities
• Community spaces
• Commercial offerings

The redevelopment aims to create a more sustainable, accessible and future-ready beachfront precinct while continuing to support North Cronulla's iconic Nippers program, volunteer patrols and community events.

Why Is North Cronulla Surf Club Being Rebuilt?

The project has faced a difficult journey. Construction first began in 2022, but work came to a halt after the original builder left the site in January 2024. Following extensive engineering investigations, Sutherland Shire Council found significant structural defects in the partially completed building and concluded that repairing it would not be financially viable.

Instead, the decision was made to demolish the existing structure and construct an entirely new surf club. The new $10 million funding provides certainty for the project to move into its next phase.

When Will The New North Cronulla Surf Club Be Built?

With funding now secured, Sutherland Shire Council will continue progressing detailed design work, planning approvals, demolition and procurement before construction begins.

Council has already appointed a lead design consultant and is preparing options studies, while demolition planning is underway in partnership with NSW Public Works.

Community consultation will form part of the design process as plans for the new facility continue to develop.

Why The Redevelopment Matters For Cronulla

North Cronulla Surf Life Saving Club has been part of the local community for 100 years, training more than 5,000 volunteer lifesavers and helping keep one of Sydney's busiest beaches safe.

Over the past three patrol seasons alone, volunteers have carried out 74 rescues, while generations of local children have learned beach safety through the club's Nippers program.

The redevelopment aims to ensure those services can continue from a purpose-built facility that meets the needs of both today's volunteers and future generations of beachgoers.
