Izy Izakaya | The Urban List

This hidden izakaya in Woollahra has taken on the former Kenny Rens spot. Enter through a charcoal-coloured sliding door at the back of a poke bowl bar on Queen Street—inside, Izy’s fragrant open flame cooking and stacks of two-year-old grape wood bark make it moody, intimate and a little otherworldly too.

Izy’s modern Euro-Japanese menu is effortless, fluid and smoke-inspired. Trust us—you’re in for a real treat here. The menu changes weekly and uses neighbouring artisanal businesses like Costi Seafood and Victor Churchill to ensure quality.

As for what to sink your teeth into, think mega tasty lobster rolls, kangaroo and Davidson plum cooked over a naked flame, and their signature KFQ (koji fried quail) which pays homage to the Colonel. The ‘Salmon vs. Salmon’ is a delicious salmon tartar with salmon skin pappadums. You also can’t skip past Izy’s version of garlic bread: umami bread with wild chives, and the Brussel sprouts with XO sauce.

Can’t decide? There is also a ‘Feed Me’ tasting menu if you want to leave it to the pros.

Fun part? Once you’ve ordered, you'll get to select your chopsticks from a collection of traditional red and emerald green styles.

The drinks menu features Australian and old-world style and fantastic natural wines as well as an array of draft beers, fruity cocktails and punch bowls. The happy hour (called 'Izy Hour') runs from 5-7pm and features wine, beer and punch and, well, discounted booze, need we say more.
