The Verdict
Pinch us, more pintxos are coming to Sydney. And if you’re not sure what pintxos are, keep on reading (trust us, you’ll want to). They’re the tasty bar snacks, slightly smaller than their more famous big brother tapas, served in northern Spain and Basque regions. You can get them at Can Cava in Bondi, the recently opened Ortzi in Surry Hills, and soon, you’ll get them in Pyrmont.
Chef Justin North has teamed up with Ovolo Hotels to open Mister Percy, a pintxos and wine bar at the front of the Ovolo 1888 Darling Harbour hotel. It’s a former woolstore too, so they’ve decked out the heritage building with plush leathers and cane bark for a mod-vintage-bistro feel, and max-relax times.
The nibbles and wine are all Mediterranean in style, though firmly anchored by Australian produce. Your little snacks will include a grilled Port Lincoln sardine tart with tomato, black olive and basil; or chargrilled baby octopus from the Clarence River with local chorizo and pickled green chilli. We’re most excited though, about the potato skins, crispy-fried and served with burrata. Really, with cheese and potato, you can do no wrong.
Wines will be available by the glass, and the wine list is expertly curated by consulting sommelier Chris Morrison, and Shun Eto (formerly of QT). Expect highly regarded drops such as the Jamsheed Rousanne from Beechworth and the Nick Spencer ‘Dry Red’ Touriga-Shiraz blend from Gundagai.
Mister Percy is due to open in late July, so you can bet we’re eyeballing their Instagram like no-one’s business.
