Fruity-fresh from their party-pineapple caravan tour, W Hotels has announced they’re building W Sydney, a new luxe hotel at the old site of the IMAX theatre in Darling Harbour.
It’s goodbye to the mega-screen cinema, and hello to “The Ribbon”. Or if you prefer, The Glass Snail or The Giant Slide. The third W Hotel (a spin off of Marriott International, the world’s largest hotel group) will rise to 25 storeys between two expressways, and provide stunning views of the harbour.
The W Sydney will boast 539 guest rooms, serviced apartments, and—wait for it—an infinity pool called The Wet Deck. And never fear, they’re not getting rid of the IMAX cinema entirely, but will give it a spruce up, hopefully for future David Attenborough doco binges.
We’re liking this revamp of the Darling Harbour area. The build of the Darling Quarter food and retail precinct in 2011 was a welcome breath of fresh air, followed by the entertainment monolith International Convention Centre in 2016, and recently, the opening of Steam Mill Lane which (just quietly) is home to some of our favourite quick street eats.
The W Sydney is slated to open in 2020 and we can feel the luxe staycation vibes coming in strong already.
