Australia’s—and arguably the world’s—most hedonistic festival has announced dates for 2021. Yep, it’s time to start planning your pilgrimage down south with Dark Mofo returning from Wednesday 16 June to Tuesday 22 June.
There are a few substantial changes to Dark Mofo this year. First up is the fact it’s only running for one week rather than two. Owner of MONA, David Walsh, and Dark Mofo Creative Director Leigh Carmichael have also made the decision to drop all sponsorship activations for the debaucherous week in Hobart.
“We’re dropping all sponsorship activations, as we felt they were having a detrimental effect on the festival. While we’ve appreciated the support from many high profile brands, we want to be able to pursue our own cultural agenda free from restraint and with a renewed commitment to the art.” said Carmichael.
The 2021 iteration of Dark Mofo may also be the last, with the five-year agreement between the State Government and Mona coming to an end. Still, Walsh remains positive and leaves those planning to get down to the festival with an expectedly elusive David Walsh comment.
“Dark’s back, which, in the immortal words of Mark Spitz, who was also making a comeback, ‘could be good, could be great, could be terrible’. Mark didn’t mention that there is another possibility: it could be cancelled. But it wouldn’t be worth doing if there was no risk. There’s lots of risk, so it must really be worth doing.”
The line-up drops early April. Keep up to date over at darkmofo.net.au.
