How I Holiday: Broadway Star Ilario Grant Knows Where To Find Serious New York City Soul Food
Welcome to How I Holiday, a series of travel stories and recommendations shared by friends of Urban List from Aotearoa and Australia.
After catching Perth opening night of MJ The Michael Jackson Musical last week, we were completely awe-struck by the otherworldly talent of lead star Ilario Grant—his vocal range, insane chereography and ability to tranfix an entire theatre (and gain a roaring standing ovation might I add) are something truly special. So of course we jumped at the opportunity to chat to this Broadway talent about his time in New York City, and some of the spots he holds near and dear to his heart.
What makes New York so magical to you?
New York is magical to me because there are so many different cultures and experiences you can have all in one day! The opportunities, and the way that dreams can and do come true in NYC.
If someone was visiting NY for the very first time, where would you recommend they absolutely have to go?
Taking a walk along the high line gives such a different perspective to the city. Make sure to stop off at the Vessel!

Where can we grab the best authentic NY pizza or any other cheap and cheery meals?
In NY, any pizza spot you see, GRAB A SLICE! It’s all really good, I don’t have a favourite, I just grab one! From any of the bodegas a “chopped cheese” is a go to snack that is absolutely delicious also.
What’s your favourite bar for a post-show tipple?
My favourite bar for a post show tipple would have to be Haswell Green right next to the Neil Simone Theatre where MJ The Michael Jackson Musical is currently playing!

Is there a (or more than one!) restaurant we absolutely need to make bookings for when we’re over?
Dallas BBQ in Times Square is an absolute must. Also, Amy Ruth’s in Harlem for good soul food! You won’t regret these decisions, I promise!
What’s your favourite show you’ve ever seen on Broadway and why?
My favourite show I’ve ever seen (besides MJ the Musical) would have to be The Notebook. It was BEAUTIFULLY created. From the soundtrack to the set and the cast, it was absolutely phenomenal.
