This Award-Winning Musical Is Bringing The King Of Pop To Perth
Few sounds in the world have the same visceral effect as the opening bars of Beat It.
Right from that very first ominous gong, feet start tapping, shoulders start shimmering, and entire generations are transported back to school discos, wedding dance floors and MTV sing-alongs.
Now imagine that energy inside a packed theatre, backed by more than 25 Michael Jackson hits and some jaw-dropping choreography performed by an outrageously talented cast.
Actually, no need to imagine, that’s just what to expect at MJ The Michael Jackson Musical.
After dazzling audiences in Sydney, Melbourne and selling out in Brisbane, the Olivier and four-time Tony Award-winning production is moonwalking into Crown Theatre for the final stop of its national tour on a short and snappy season.
Centred around the creation of Michael Jackson’s iconic 1992 Dangerous World Tour, MJ The Michael Jackson Musical drops audiences into three high-pressure days of rehearsals as one of the biggest live shows on the planet begins taking shape.
But this isn't a greatest-hits concert disguised as a musical.
Instead, MJ The Michael Jackson Musical uses the chaos, creativity and sheer scale of preparing for a global stadium tour to explore the artistry behind one of the most influential entertainers of all time. Through rehearsals, conversations and behind-the-scenes moments, audiences get a rare glimpse at the obsessive attention to detail and creative drive that helped transform Michael Jackson into a cultural phenomenon.
Of course, you’re also here for the songs, and MJ The Michael Jackson Musical delivers them in spades.
Featuring more than 25 of Jackson’s chart-topping tunes, the production is packed with wall-to-wall bangers. Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Thriller, Black Or White and Man In The Mirror—if it’s spent any amount of time living rent-free in your head over the last four decades, chances are it’s in the show. Whether you grew up listening to them on vinyl, cassette, CD or Spotify, these are the songs everyone knows by heart, even if they don't realise it.
Leading the Australian cast is Broadway performer Ilario Grant as MJ, supported by a creative team and powerhouse ensemble whose choreography is considerably more polished than our collective attempts at moonwalking across slippery kitchen tiles.
More than seven million people worldwide have already seen the show, but Perth audiences only have until 19 July to catch it. Once the final curtain falls, you’ll need a passport to see it again.
Tickets start from $70, with VIP experiences available for die-hard fans wanting an extra peek behind the curtain.
Don’t stop ‘til you get enough, secure your seats to MJ The Michael Jackson Musical at Crown Theatre before the Australian run has beat it.
