How I Holiday: Where Pinky And Kamal Founder Natalie Carusi Finds Magic In Bali
Welcome to How I Holiday, a series of travel stories and recommendations shared by friends of Urban List from Aotearoa and Australia.
Natalie Carusi founded her chic, trend-forward active and leisure wear brand Pinky and Kamal after a humanitarian aid trip to Bangladesh in 2015 and has been on a mission to bridge functional and stylish fashion ever since. For her and her beautiful (newly-expanded) fam, Bali is a place of complete retreat away from the chaos of everyday life, so we wanted to dive into her fave insider reccos.
Why is Bali special to you?
Everything about Bali feels magical. There’s an energy that makes you instantly slow down and feel good.
The warmth of the Balinese people, the effortless blend of cultures, and the island’s sense of freedom are unlike anywhere else. I love how traditional Indonesian culture sits so beautifully beside the creativity and modern spirit travellers bring. It’s a place where food, fashion, design, and wellness intertwine an adult’s playground with a deeply soulful heart.
What's a core memory you have from Bali?
Bali is where I started my business, and I began to work with a wonderful Indonesian woman who became a dear friend. That experience showed me a side of the island I’d never have known as just a visitor.
I also treasure the memories of travelling there solo, riding scooters, working from cafés, dropping into yoga studios, and feeling completely free. There’s something about the Bali air that brings you back to yourself, pure happiness on a soul level.

Where should people eat, drink, stay, and play in Bali?
To eat, you can't miss Uluwatu Surf Villas, Cuca in Jimbaran, SKOOL Kitchen in Canggu and Warung Bambu in Nusa Lembongan. When it's time to play its all about LYAG Spa for an incredible massage in a beautifully designed space, Spring Spa or Alchemy Yoga and Meditation Center in Uluwatu. Where to stay? You can't go past Uluwatu Surf Villas or Tekko Villas.
What's the best meal you've ever had in Bali?
Without question, Cuca in Jimbaran. Every dish bursts with flavour and creativity. We had the chef’s selection menu, and it was easily one of the most memorable meals of my life.

What's the best event on Bali's cultural calendar?
Nyepi is a truly special experience. The Balinese New Year when the entire island falls silent for a day and night. No one leaves their homes, and even the lights go out, creating a powerful, almost sacred stillness. Before and after, the streets come alive with colourful parades and incredible handmade sculptures, a beautiful reflection of Bali’s spiritual heartbeat.
