New Zealand’s Best Pies Have Officially Been Named For 2026

New Zealand takes its pies seriously, and the results of the 2026 New Zealand Bakels Supreme Pie Awards are officially in.

This year’s winners span everything from dependable bacon and egg and mince and cheese to creamy pāua, Malaysian scallop and prawn laksa, and an oven-roasted pear pie layered with vanilla, caramel and ginger.

Auckland bakeries dominated several of the classic categories. Levain Artisan Bakery in Blockhouse Bay took gold for both its bacon and egg and steak and gravy pies, while Eurobake Espresso in Kumeū claimed the top spot for mince and cheese.

Elsewhere, Richoux Patisserie in Ellerslie was named the mince and gravy champion, Taste Bakery and Roast in Henderson won the potato top category, and High Bakery & Cafe in Hamilton took out gold for steak and cheese.

Pie2go Mairangi Bay Bakery served up the country’s best chicken and vegetable pie, while Penny Lanes Bakery in Onehunga won the vegetarian category with a mix of vegetables, mushroom and spinach.

Things became more inventive in the gourmet categories. The Village Bakery Cafe in Piopio took gold for its creamy pāua and cheese pie, beating Richoux Patisserie’s Malaysian scallop and prawn laksa creation. In the Café Boutique category, Christchurch’s Traiteur of Merivale came out on top with an oven-roasted pear pie featuring vanilla, caramel and ginger.

• Gourmet meat: The Village Bakery Cafe, Piopio
• Vegetarian: Penny Lanes Bakery, Onehunga
• Café Boutique: Traiteur of Merivale, Christchurch
• Commercial/Wholesale: Kaipai Bakery, Wānaka
