Europe’s Biggest Second-Hand Fashion Marketplace Is Finally Launching In Australia
Australia's second-hand shopping boom just gained a major new player. After years of building a loyal following across Europe, Vinted has officially launched locally—giving Australians a new platform to buy and sell everything from designer fashion and vintage finds to homewares, electronics and kids' gear.
If you've travelled through Europe in recent years, there's a good chance you've already heard of it. Founded in Lithuania in 2008, Vinted has grown into one of the continent's largest resale marketplaces, with millions of users across more than 25 countries. Now, Australians will be able to join the platform for the first time.
Unlike many resale marketplaces, Vinted doesn't charge sellers listing or commission fees, meaning users keep 100% of what they earn when an item sells. Once a purchase is made, payment and shipping are handled directly through the app, with prepaid Australia Post shipping labels generated automatically for sellers.
The timing couldn't be better. Research commissioned by the company found most Australians have items at home they believe could be sold, but the biggest motivation isn't necessarily making extra cash. Instead, clearing space has overtaken cost-of-living pressures as the biggest driver for selling, suggesting resale is becoming less about necessity and more about changing consumption habits.
It's equally telling that shoppers aren't only looking for bargains anymore. Increasingly, second-hand shopping has become a way to find pieces that feel more individual than what's currently sitting on retail shelves—a trend that's helped vintage stores, curated markets and archival fashion continue to grow across Sydney and Melbourne.
The platform itself has been designed to remove much of the friction from peer-to-peer selling. Listings are free to create, buyers and sellers can message one another before purchase, and once an item is sold, sellers simply print a prepaid shipping label and drop their parcel at an Australia Post location. Payments are only released after buyers confirm their order has arrived as described.
Whether you're looking to finally clear out that wardrobe full of "just in case" purchases or you're always chasing the next vintage designer find, Australia's second-hand fashion scene just got a whole lot bigger.
