It’s that time of the year again where Auckland artists crawl out of their studios and share their masterpieces with the rest of the city and we couldn’t be any more excited.

With a wealth of talent in the City of Sails, expect to ‘oooh’ and ‘aaah’ as art lights up your life.

With so much on, we’ve narrowed down the best of Auckland’s Art Week that’s not to be missed.

Quick Draw

Tuesday 10th October 5-9pm Chancery Square

Fancy getting a self-portrait to hang in your lovely abode? Quick Draw is perfect to remind your self how awesome you are, head to Chancery Square and get a talented artist sketch out those stunning feature of yours.

Art and Science- The Perfect Marriage

Thursday 12th October & Friday 13th October 3-5pm The University of Auckland

Art and science may seem like polar opposites but watch as the two are intertwined in an art week collaboration. The University of Auckland’s science department will host this mysterious night for you to discover Auckland’s incredible art that’s usually hidden away. Intrigued? Book yourself a spot on this tour before you have regrets. 

Handmade In Parnell

Saturday 14th October

Celebrate Art Week by becoming an artist yourself. Local artists and crafters team up in the central city hub of Parnell to offer you some cool new tricks you can show off to your mates. You can perfect a wax seal to beeswax candle rolling or perhaps you’ll find a new hidden talent in watercolours? Awaken that inner artist in you and embrace art week in full force.

Creative Writing Project

Sunday 15th October

Drawing Club

You didn’t really follow that drawing passion of yours into your schooling but your hand still itches for a pencil and paper? Here’s your chance to get back into action. Special guest DJs will set the mood and  there will  be models to draw— all you need to do is show up and let your hands do the magic.

Glow At Art week

Friday 13th- Sunday 15th October

A night of luminous lights and festivities, Glow starts with a bang—literally—as drums and fire dancing kick-starts the weekend at Devonport’s Windsor Park. With music, games and other festivities, glow-in-the-dark art installations are displayed along the reserve inviting you to admire and Instagram the shizz out of it. Bring your bike along and turn that evening stroll to a race.  With the chance to dress up your ride to fit the glow theme, you’re in for a night of good fun.

Electric Night

Thursday 12th October Krd, Ponsonby, Arch Hill

Browse through late night art galleries in Auckland’s artsy suburbs with walking tours to guide you through the secret gems of the city. Sounds like the perfect date night idea if you’re curious about Auckland’s art scene.

Bring or borrow a bike and explore your city of art. It’s the perfect way to get your exercise fix and a breath of fresh air. What’s this? Bikes and art? Congratulations you’re officially arty af.  

Typewriter Poetry Session.

Thursday 12th October, Holm

If you didn’t even have a secret admirer in high school to write you a sweet innocent poem about you, why not let the talented Tourrettes (a.k.a Dominic Hoey) write you a not-so innocent poem instead? Give a donation and a summary of your life or the reason why everyone should hate your ex-boyfriend and he’ll whip up a witty personalized piece on his trusty typewriter for you.   

StreetArt Dego

Tuesday 10th October, Khartoum Place

Food becomes art in this Art Week event. Five food vendors pair up with local creative talent as you feast your eyes on art and devour street eats. La Lumiere will light up the trees to transport you to an enchanted forest where Puha & Pakeha will serve up earthy horopito eats to contrast this glimmery night. With more food and displays of art on the night, it’s the perfect way to soak up Auckland art.

Changing Lanes

Saturday 7th – Saturday 15th October Durham St East, Exchange Lane, St Matthews

Auckland Art week, Heart of the City and Auckland Council come together to bring a social and interactive installation to Auckland streets.  New Zealand’s leading artists will transform some of Auckland’s laneways to an urban art piece celebrating heritage and also the future. Sure to take your breath away, swing by on your next city stroll.
