Let’s be honest, as much as we love Birkenhead, it didn’t reallyhave a whole lot going on when it comes to wining and dining—until now. Introducing the new kid on the block: The Junction Eatery. Overlooking the stunning Waitemata Harbour, the café-cum-bistro serves mouthwatering dishes morning, noon and night.

Proud new owner Chris Jones saw the need for a hip joint in the area because locals were travelling further afield to eat out. “People in this postcode often travel to Takapuna or even Ponsonby to enjoy a decent brew and modern cafe fare. But they don’t need to anymore.” And he’s right.

From the kitchen there’s an all-day brunch and lunch menu that later transitions to night-time-appropriate meals once the sun starts to set.

We sampled the eggs bene (always a good test in a new cafe) and this one was hands down a winner. Crispy bacon and perfectly poached eggs sit atop a beet-infused potato gravlax (gluten-free eaters, rejoice). The hollandaise is just that little bit extra special with the addition of burnt butter, giving the dish a subtle nutty flavour.

Here, they claim to have ‘the best waffles in Auckland’. Huge call, but we might have to agree. Their waffle maker was especially made for them and imported from Belgium. And there’s not just one waffle offering available—there’s four.

Savoury options include a fun take on a bene with a parmesan-crusted chicken breast and bearnaise sauce. The sweet offerings feature either berries or Brazilian caramel sauce with crunchy granola—both of which are topped with their homemade probiotic sorbet.

Coffee is Atomic—and it’s faultless. Chris aims to change the notion that “you can’t get a good coffee after 3pm” with a dedicated barista on site, all day everyday until 9pm.

And there’s no ‘giant commercial’ beverages onsite. They make all their own sodas without the use of refined sugar (which no doubt your waist will thank you for). And they’re all about supporting locals where they can. Hallertau on tap? Check. Small, but highly curated wine list? Check. Local sangria on tap? Check.

If you’re dining at night expect options of perfectly crafted lamb sliders, melt-in-your-mouth lamb shanks, a tender scotch fillet or market fish accompanied with ye ol’ faithful salad and chips.

The Junction Eatery is a faultless cafe and bistro all-in-one. Boasting slick service, exciting eats and arguably one of the best views the City Of Sails has to offer, this new opening should be at the top of your to-do list.
