Brisbane, ANZAC Day 2019 is here and celebrations just wouldn’t be complete without a game or two of two-up in celebration of our honoured diggers. The traditional game popularised by Australian soldiers during World War I, two-up has continued to be a firm tradition in ANZAC Day festivities nationwide.
Here are five pubs in Brisbane putting on a traditional game of two-up this ANZAC Day.
The Shafston Hotel
ANZAC Day just wouldn’t be complete in Brisbane without The Shafston Hotel’s annual Tinnies & two-up laneway festival, kicking off this year at 11am. With highlights like a massive outdoor two-up arena, gourmet food trucks from all of our favourite food trucks and the all-important selection of tinnies, The Shafston is honouring our diggers in true blue style. Don’t forget to try one of their hand-crafted cocktails, served in a tinnie can, naturally. We’re pretty sure nothing can get more Aussie than that.
Pavlova, ANZAC biscuits and an all-day barbeque are the name of the game when it comes to ANZAC Day at the Regatta Hotel, but two-up is definitely also on the agenda. Opening at 5:30am for all your post-dawn service feed needs, festivities will kick on through the day (two-up kicks off at 1pm) into the night with a slew of talented local musicians gearing up as the evening rolls around. Playing two-up to a killer soundtrack from our very own local legends with a beer in one hand and a snag in the other? Sign us the heck up!
The Glen Hotel
Eight Mile Plains
Southsiders, don’t fret, there’s plenty of two-up opportunities for you at The Glen Hotel without the dreaded trek into the city. The Deck, the Glen’s bistro and bar, will be open from 11:30am, with the iconic two-up tournament kicking off at 1pm. Specials will abound on the day so don’t forget to tuck into some traditional Aussie fare in between killing it at two-up. Look out Glen-goers, we’re coming for you.
Story Bridge Hotel
The Story Bridge Hotel is not messing around this ANZAC Day in Brisbane when it comes to commemorating diggers past and present in style. Starting with breakfast from 6:30am, celebrations—including our beloved two-up—will kick off from 2pm in classic, beer-drenched style. Internationally acclaimed musicians Lawrence And The Machine are set to headline the evening’s celebrations with a live performance in the Corner Bar from 5pm to 9pm. See, we told you—so not messing around.
The Fox Hotel
Claiming to hold Brisbane’s biggest two-up ring out back in Fish Lane, The Fox Hotel knows more than a thing or two about Australia’s favourite ANZAC tradition. Two-up will start at 10am, along with the rest of the celebrations. Beer will also flow aplenty from the bar, with part of every beer sold donated directly to the Brisbane Legacy House, a volunteer organisation dedicated to providing support and services for the families of veterans who have passed away or given their health in service to their country. So basically you can consume as much glorious liquid carbs as you want without feeling guilty because you're supporting a good cause.
