Brisbane is currently going through a slate of once-in-a-generation developments that will completely revamp the way we work and play—and its latest project is shaping up to be an absolute game-changer for Woolloongabba.

While we’ve finally (kind of) come to terms with the fact that The Gabba isn’t endgame for Brisbane and will be demolished after the 2032 Olympic Games, we finally know what’s on the horizon for the iconic site.

A new Gabba Entertainment and Housing precinct is officially in the works, with site drilling now underway. The precinct is made up of two key areas: Gabba West which will house a 17,000-seat arena and Gabba East which is set to be a mixed-use precinct.

The Gabba Arena will be adjacent to the Woolloongabba Station that’s part of the Cross River Rail project, meaning a simple train ride will take you to world-class gigs, games, and major entertainment events. Meanwhile, the housing and entertainment precinct will take over the 5.75-hectare site that currently holds The Gabba with hospitality, retail and commercial offerings as well as thousands of new homes.

So, who’s going to deliver this transformative project? That’s yet to be determined, with the Queensland Government working through a shortlist of proponents who want to bring the development to life. The new Gabba precinct will meet the needs that were set to be served by the proposed Brisbane Live project at Roma Street Parkland, and will offer an alternative for live music and events that are usually reserved for Boondall’s Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
