If your heart is saying Euro summer but your bank balance is firmly saying “stay at home”, consider this your sign to look closer to home. No long-haul flights, no jet lag—just a quick hop from Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne and, in a few episodes of Bridgerton time, you’ll be touching down in North Queensland’s laidback jewel, Townsville

Not familiar with this dreamy region? It’s one of the few places on Earth where you can snorkel the Great Barrier Reef in the morning, and wander through a rainforest older than the Amazon in the arvo. It might not be Europe, but Townsville serves up the kind of bucket list, overseas-feeling experiences that’ll have you questioning why you ever needed a passport in the first place.

Bask In The Beauty Of Australia’s Tallest Single-Drop Waterfall

Wallaman Falls

If you’re chasing the kind of natural beauty that stops you in your tracks, make a beeline for Wallaman Falls. Nestled within the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics, the single-drop waterfall plunges a neck-cranking 268 metres into the lush surrounds of Girringun National Park, with a roar you’ll feel in your chest long before your eyes clock it.

Flowing year-round, if you want max beauty without the calf burn, hit the 800m return Bangguruu Track winding through rainforest to rock pools perfect for a dip. Keen to stretch your legs? The Djinda Walk (4km return), dishes up primo views of Stoney Creek escarpment and the falls in all their glory.

Insider Intel: Make a night of it and pitch a tent at the Wallaman Falls camping area. Right by Stony Creek, you’ll fall asleep to the soundtrack of Mother Nature. Just make sure you organise a permit if you're planning on sticking around for the night.

Discover The Jurassic-Like Beauty Of Hinchinbrook Island

Hichinbrook Island

Raw, rugged and totally off-grid, Hinchinbrook Island is where Mother Nature really shows off. Set just off the coast from Ingham (best accessed via Lucinda), the island is all volcanic peaks, thundering waterfalls, pristine beaches and a labyrinth of walking tracks—none more famous than the 32-kilometre Thorsborne Trail that winds around the island. If you're keen to leave the planning to the experts, the crew at World Expeditions offer guided trips of the trail.

An absolute must do? A refreshing float at Zoe Falls, where you’ll likely have the place to yourself—visitor numbers are capped at just 60 people on the island at any one time to help preserve its untouched beauty.

Insider Intel: You can camp on the island for just $7.50 per night, falling asleep on the edge of the Great Barrier Reef. Just remember to organise a permit if you're planning on pitching a tent.

Marvel At A Pack Of Texas Longhorns

Texan Longhorn Cows

If Yellowstone has you dreaming of wide-open ranches and cowboy country, consider this your Aussie spin. Head to Charters Towers, where Texas Longhorn Tours serves up serious Wild West vibes—complete with some of the longest-horned cattle on the planet. We’re talking horns spanning more than 2.5m tip-to-tip!

There’s a bunch of experiences to check out but our pick is the Texas Longhorn Safari. Over three hours you’ll cruise around the 110,000-acre cattle station in all-terrain Polaris Rangers, getting up close with these iconic longhorns and even snap a pic with them. Along the way, you’ll dive into the history of the breed, while also clocking bison and Scottish Highland cows (the cute fluffy ones). Back at base, settle in for a classic Aussie smoko—think billy tea, ANZAC biscuits and a pecan slice you’ll want seconds of.

Swap The Med For Magnetic Island

Magnetic Island.

Skip the Greek Islands—Magnetic Island is Townsville’s answer to a Euro summer. Just a 20-minute boat ride from the mainland, this sun-drenched escape serves up 23 postcard-perfect beaches where your daily uniform is swimmers, sandy feet and not much else.

Want to explore further? Feel the wind in your hair as you whip around the island in a topless car, stopping at famous Forts Walk for ocean views, wild koala spotting, and WWII ruins. Swing by Geoffrey Bay to spot adorable rock wallabies bouncing across the boulders, or head to Bounce, an eco-accredited wildlife park home to koalas and wombats. If you want to explore beneath the surface, pull on some flippers and follow the snorkel trails at Nelly Bay to see coral gardens and vibrant fish. Pleasure Divers will take you on guided tours straight off the beach, while Aquascene Magnetic Island offers snorkelling day trips by boat. For a peek at the island's secluded west coast, hop on an eco-friendly MI Ride Bus Tour.

Explore An Underwater Museum

Underwater Museum

After a brag-worthy experience that will make all of your mates jealous? Diving the Museum of Underwater Art (MOUA) is hard to beat. The first of its kind in the Southern Hemisphere, this otherworldly gallery by world-renowned artist Jason deCaires Taylor features a series of sculptures submerged off the coast of Townsville, on the Great Barrier Reef. The sculptures—each inspired by members of the science community and First Nations people—are designed to become living coral nurses that support the reef.

There are several installations to explore, including the Coral Greenhouse (a Guinness World Record holder for the largest underwater art structure), best experienced on a dive, and the Ocean Sentinels, designed for snorkellers. Set just five metres below the surface, you can easily spot them while snorkelling the John Brewer Reef. Adrenalin Snorkel & Dive offers day trips for diving and snorkelling around the MUOA, along with trips to the Yongala Shipwreck if you're keen to explore a different kind of underwater museum.

Insider Intel: If you want to stay dry, check out Ocean Siren, a striking sculpture that rises from the sea and can be seen from Townsville's Strand foreshore. Time your visit for dusk and watch her shift colour in response to the real-time water temps.

Hike To A View Worthy Of Rio

Castle Hill

If you’ve ever saved a lookout in Rio or Cape Town to your travel wishlist, consider this your local equivalent. Rising right in the heart of the city, Castle Hill is Townsville’s pink granite giant. Tackle the Goat Track, a short but steep climb that rewards you with 360-degree views across Townsville, Magnetic Island and the Coral Sea. Want views without raising your heartrate? You can also drive to the summit.

Whichever mode of transport you choose, time your visit for sunrise or sunset, when the city glows and the ocean stretches into the horizon—camera roll at the ready. There’s even a slice of history up top, with a WWII observation bunker and stories of American soldiers who once used the vantage point to watch over the coast.

Swap Croatia For A Great Barrier Reef Sail

Pilgrim Sailing

Forget Sail Croatia and consider this your no-passport-required alternative. Just off Townsville, the Great Barrier Reef offers up calm, crystal-clear waters, secluded anchorages and straight up stunning scenery—aka premium sailing conditions.

Let someone else take the helm and step aboard a luxury yacht with operators like Pilgrim Sailing, a 58-foot beauty hosting just 12 guests. The itinerary is packed with a gourmet lunch, flowing vino and lazy arvos sprawled on the deck between snorkel sessions. If you’re short on a time, Big Mama Sailing’s sunset sail ticks all the holiday boxes, with a welcome drink, antipasto platter and golden-hour views that’ll give you goosebumps.

Fake A Bali Escape At Ardo

Ardo Hotel Pool

Those craving a blissful Bali vacay will want to check themselves into Townsville’s newest luxury digs. Ardo is a design-lover’s dream, with a refined coastal palette and elevated touches that dial up the indulgence. Perched on the Coral Sea, book the Ardo Suite and soak in the circular bath on the balcony—vino in hand. Then head to the rooftop, where terracotta loungers and umbrellas frame an infinity pool with uninterrupted ocean views. Live DJs soundtrack your swim while the bar slings tropical sips and snacks. It’s giving Bali beach club and we’re very into it.

Want more? Reset at the dreamy day spa, then feast your way through the hotel’s two restaurants—Japanese-inspired Terasu and elevated Australian fare at Marmor.
