A gallery, atelier and retail experience walk into a bar. The result? James Street’s stunning new flagship pushing the boundaries on what a store can be. 

From internationally acclaimed designer, artist and local Heidi Middleton comes ARTCLUB—a new retail concept that merges fashion, art, sculpture and design in one dynamic space. It’s a living expression of Middleton’s multidisciplinary world, who cut her chops as co-founder and creative director of the globally celebrated fashion house sass & bide. In fact, ARTCLUB now occupies the same site as the sass & bide boutique, marking a full-circle moment and return to Brisbane for Middleton. 

Across a six-metre gallery wall, you can check out Middleton’s original artworks alongside abstract sculptures forming an alluring gallery-like landscape. These are joined by fashion pieces for sale hanging from brass railings—many of which are hand cut, sewn and finished in the working atelier operating on the mezzanine overlooking the retail floor. It’s an ode to slow fashion and sustainable production, allowing visitors to peek behind the scenes and even request bespoke adaptations.

While ARTCLUB is a permanent addition to James Street, it isn’t set in stone and will continue to evolve as a gallery, studio and gathering place with events and collaborations in its future. Curated to celebrate individuality, artistry and community, ARTCLUB is a welcome return to mindful making. Forget hauls, here you’ll find a piece to cherish for a lifetime.
