Taking over the basement level of the CBD’s heritage-listed St. Francis House, Before + After is the kind of place you’ll only find if you know it’s there. Why else would you wander down a dingy-looking alleyway and through an unmarked door to a subterranean bolthole if you didn’t know there were cocktails awaiting you inside? Make the effort to seek it out though, and you’ll be rewarded with a dimly-lit after work spot for drinks and snacks headed up by Agnes allum, George Curtis. 

The name is a bit of a hint towards the ideal time to drop in here—either before dinner for an aperitif of light, approachable cocktails showcasing native ingredients, or after dinner for a digestif from the collection of some 45 different types of amari (think Campari), including vintage drops like a 1940s bottle of Zucca Rabarbaro. You can also sip on a curated line up of wines or beers, if you prefer to keep things simple. 

As for snacks, you might find yourself considering skipping the dinner reservation and staying to nibble on the likes of shrimp rolls, grilled cheese and fish crudo, with a menu developed by Alba Bar And Deli’s Evan Nagel. There’s even a sweet option for post-dinner treats—a drunken affogato that swaps coffee for your choice of amaro.
