Big vibes and big flavours are what you can expect at Newstead’s bold new Thai spot—inspired by the neon lights and electric atmosphere tucked away in Bangkok side streets way back when.
Big Boy Bangkok is nostalgic and charismatic, taking cues from the 50s to 70s to deliver a vibrant eatery decked out in South-East Asian graphics, vintage textures and playful typography. The name? A nod to the food vendors who are known for calling out “hey big boy” to entice you towards their street eats, the same cheeky but welcoming spirit will be thriving inside the lively restaurant.
Whether you’re feeling peckish or have a big appetite to fill, the menu is serving the goods across street-style bites and elevated takes on Bangkok staples. On the smaller side, there’s scallop betel leaves with coconut, shallot and chilli, crispy fish cakes with sweet chilli and lime, or spice-marinated chicken with Big Boy’s signature stay sauce. Meanwhile, the shared plates are fragrant and total crowd-pleasers, like fried rice with Moreton Bay bug and spanner crab, a slow-cooked Massaman curry, and crispy whole fish served with a vibrant three-flavour sauce.
The playful spot is also mixing it up behind the bar, taking a flavour-driven approach across cocktails like the Thai Me Up (tequila, agave, lemon and Thai basil), the Spicy Kathoey (mango chilli gin, yuzu and lemongrass) and the Hey Big Boy—a tropical tiki-style mix of rums, lemongrass, passionfruit and guava.
Big Boy Bangkok opens on Thursday 20 November. Book here.
