Born from a desire to do something different, founders Chris Banham and Dan Wilson are on a mission to demystify the process of buying wine by inviting you to explore a carefully curated selection without the pressure. They’re not here to throw you off with talk of body and tannins; simply tell them the who, what and where, and they’ll help you find your perfect match in a space that feels more like a friend’s living room than a traditional bottle-o. 

“Whether you are looking for champagne for sex in the bath, a smokey grenache for a night in the dark with Bob Dylan, or even the ideal wine for doing the ironing while watching Gossip Girl, we have the right wine for the right moment,” the founders said. “[With] wines from Australia and abroad, the wines that sit on the shelf hold place because of how they feel when you drink them. We only stock the wine we like to enjoy.” 

You’ll find the winehouse hidden in a basement off Doggett Street, leaning into its subterranean character with a raw edge and locally sourced art. Alongside the grab-and-go retail selection, you can also enjoy a sip inside from the ever-changing by-the-glass list. It’s intimate, it’s comfortable and it’s brimming with an intentionally broad range that spans both budget-friendly and cellar-worthy bottles alike. 

While the guided customer service is at the heart of the Fountainhead offering, the winehouse will continue to evolve as it lays down its roots with the aim to offer education sessions, group tastings, private masterclasses and snacks in the future.
