Queensland oldest licensed pub is reopening after a $6 million upgrade, marking a new era for Cleveland’s Grand View Hotel
They say you can’t teach an old dog new tricks, but that’s certainly not the case for Queensland’s oldest licensed pub, which is reopening after a $6 million upgrade. Cleveland’s iconic Grand View Hotel is entering a new era in its proud 174-year history—one built on community connection, top-notch dining, and good ol’ hospitality.
With its prime position overlooking North Stradbroke Island, the GV has long been a local favourite since first opening its doors way back in 1851. While it was definitely time for an upgrade, the extensive renovations have been carefully executed to preserve the Cleveland pub’s heritage charm and historic features.
The new GV now features a purpose-built function marquee, an upper dining terrace, and a pet-friendly lawn—making room for bigger and better events. On the food front, the multimillion-dollar kitchen rebuilt and expanded bar has made way for Australia’s largest rotisserie oven, an Italian pizza oven, and a cutting-edge beer system with double the taps and multiple service points. It’s the perfect addition alongside the new dedicated outdoor bar, so you can enjoy more frothy ones with less of a wait. Cheers to that.
Grand View Hotel’s heritage-listed hallway and Cleveland Room remain untouched, allowing their original character to shine, while the renovations unearthed a historic cistern—featured in an 1855 advertisement for Cleveland House—that has now become a heritage centrepiece. You can also expect all your favourite hallmarks of a good pub, including live sports on a large outdoor screen, live entertainment, a kid’s play area, and outdoor seating to soak in the bay.
“The transformation is not just a facelift, it’s a safeguard for one of Queensland’s most historic venues, ensuring it remains a cornerstone of the community and a place where new memories continue to be made,” Kickon Group CEO and Founder Craig Shearer said. “We can’t wait to welcome locals and day trippers alike back to the Grand View for a cold beer, great food, and the kind of amazing hospitality that turns a visit into a lasting memory. The Grand View isn’t just a pub—it’s a part of Queensland’s story, and we’re proud to keep that story alive for generations to come.”
Grand View Hotel will officially reopen mid-October.
