A slice of Rome, literally, has arrived in Newstead with In Teglia Pizzoteca: an Italian hotspot for Roman-style pizza, focaccia sandwiches and spritzes.
In Teglia is part pizzeria, part wine house, encouraging you to embrace the ‘drop-in’ pizza culture that makes up Rome’s regular rhythm. “In Australia, pizza has largely become either large-format takeaway or something reserved for weekends,” said In Teglia Founder and owner, Lachlan Sleeman. “In Rome, it sits within the rhythm of everyday life. It is bought by the slice, eaten standing up, and shared casually. We are not replicating Italy for effect; we are simply applying the Roman method in a way that makes sense for Queensland.”
“Pizza in teglia” translates to pizza in the tray, so you can expect dough fermented for 72 hours to form crisp rectangular slices topped with ingredients selected for both quality and local provenance. In Teglia also serves up sandwiches, fresh salads and a curated aperitivo list that leans on highly sippable spritzes.
You’ll find In Teglia at Newstead’s Haven precinct across the road from Gasworks, making it an easy stop on an everyday basis. “The space reflects the same philosophy as the menu,” Sleeman said. “Warm and textural, with terracotta, limewash accents, designed for late afternoons and early evenings. The sun’s still up, pop in for a quick spritz, two slices, and be out the door in 45 minutes. That’s the rhythm we’re designing for.”
