Aussies have long loved Indian food, so it’s no surprise that when Zach Dexter travelled to Mohali in the country’s north, he became enraptured with the flavours of the city. Just one bite of the leavened flatbread dish known as kulcha was all it took to get Zach hooked. He knew he had to share these flavours with his friends back in Oz by bringing the taste of this crispy and delicious traditional Indian street food onto home soil.
After a raving trial-by-fire debut at Woodford Folk Festival, Zach and his brother, Calvin, decided to grace the streets of West End with the taste of kulcha, quietly opening their doors (and their oven) in mid-May. Their introductory menu features a range of different flatbread flavours, including kulcha stuffed with baked potato, onion and spices, or cheesy mushroom and paneer. You can also pick up plenty of authentic Indian snacks, such as their mouth-watering onion, mango and chilli dipping sauce, masala fries, and desserts like traditional Indian ice cream (otherwise known as kulfi).
As an added bonus, the menu is vegetarian-friendly, with meat available as an add-on for select dishes. Despite being relatively new to the foodie scene, the Dexter brothers have certainly stumbled onto a hit—so book a table and come get Kulcha’d.
