Whether you’re looking for your new weekend local fish ‘n’ chip spot, or you only eat the finest caviar, New Farm’s new seafood market and eatery has something for you. Owner Michael Hatzifotis made a name for himself with his James Street café, Cantinho, and is now pursuing his passion for seafood with the opening of New Farm Seafood Market in Merthyr Village in New Farm.

Part seafood market, part restaurant, part fish ‘n’ chippery, here you can either pick up some fresh seafood to cook up at home or sit down to have it cooked for you. Everything on ice or in the kitchen (they use the market as their pantry) here is locally and sustainably sourced, whether it’s from local line fishermen, their own trawler or elsewhere. In even better news, almost everything is completely gluten-free apart from the burgers—yes, even the fish and chips. The use of gluten-free batter and crumbs means coeliacs needn’t worry about cross-contamination, an absolute game changer if you ask us.

Apart from dishing up some of the freshest oysters, prawns, calamari and scallops you’ll get your hands on, the fish of the day is ever-changing depending on what they can get their hands on (and fillet in house) that morning. A must-try is the whole cooked fish, which comes completely deboned and doused in a mouth-wateringly good buttery sauce—don’t question us on this. If you’re a little hesitant on seafood, you can opt for the lamb shoulder or grab some chicken-salted hot chips or potato scallops to dip into house made sauces.

There’s plenty of room for you to sit down and enjoy your chosen feed, with tables both inside around the seafood market or on the pavement outside. Bonus, it’s not just the kitchen that’s open until 9pm—you can stop in and get your fresh seafood at any time too. Stock up on house made sauces from the pantry and ready-to-cook frozen seafood while you’re there too.
