Opening on Thursday 11 May is Oh Monk, a buzzing new modern Asian eatery in Tarragindi. We love a suburban restaurant, and Oh Monk promises to be one worth ditching your usual city haunts for. After a hefty makeover, this corner eatery in a small neighbourhood complex is now a vibrant spot for group catch ups, date nights and everything in between, featuring neon lights, terracotta walls, a green tiled bar and a multitude of hanging white wicker lanterns.

Head chef and co-owner Chef Batt has a background that includes everywhere from Bangkok’s Michelin-starred Le Du to Brisbane’s Pawpaw and Longtime, so you can expect some impressively bold flavours to come out of the kitchen here. The menu is all about breaking the boundaries of traditional Asian cuisines—and those with dietaries will be happy to know that there’s plenty of gluten-free and vegan options to choose from, even to the extent of a separate fryer for the coeliacs amongst us.

For those unrestrained in their menu choices, you can start off with small plates like a chicken katsu sando, pork belly bao buns and DIY Peking duck pancakes, before moving onto hearty curries of beef rib panag and roasted red duck, or wok feeds like cashew nut stir-fry and pad Thai. You’ll even want to make friends with the salads—options like coconut grilled pork belly salad and slow-cooked beef ribs pawpaw salad barely sound like salads at all.

Best of all, to celebrate their opening, Oh Monk is doing an exclusive opening promo of a free serve of crispy karaage chicken with any order over $40 until 21 May—so book your table in quick.
