You’ll soon have a brand-new way to satisfy your sweet tooth in s ō f u: a silken tofu gelato store coming to the CBD.
The concept is helmed by husband-and-wife duo Sharon Sia and Albert Maung, who were craving a nightcap that’s indulgent without being too sweet. “We’ve always loved to have sweet treats after dinner but sometimes we find the regular gelato could feel a little too sweet and heavy,” said Sia. “If you grew up around Asian desserts, you’ll know the highest compliment is usually ‘it’s not too sweet’.”
While tofu-based desserts are very popular across Asia’s modern dining scene, s ō f u will be a Brisbane-first that’s unexpected but approachable thanks to its delicate flavour and signature silky texture. You can watch the gelato as its churned fresh onsite using clean ingredients—including signatures of Asian cuisine like black sesame, oolong tea leaves, pandan leaves and more.
Similarly, the flavours are inspired by the offerings inside Asian bakeries and tea shops like the original tofu, oolong milk tea, matcha, and pandan coconut. There will be vegan-friendly options, plus coffee and matcha also available inside the minimalistic space that will double as a calm oasis within the hustle and bustle of Edward Street.
“For us, s ō f u is personal,” said Sia. “It’s inspired by the desserts we grew up eating, the nostalgic flavours we search for when we travel and the kind of place we would want to visit ourselves: simple, warm and a little unexpected.”
s ō f u is expected to open this August.
