If you know of Wynumm’s Mekhong, you’ll know that it’s one of the best Thai restaurants in Brisbane—but for those unacquainted with the bayside gem, get excited because the creator of this famed spot has opened a new Thai eatery, and it’s right in the heart of town.
Joe Kittiphat Adams has just flung open the doors on Thai Boi, a fresh and funky establishment at the base of the Wellington Apartment Hotel in East Brisbane. Head into the lobby and you’ll find the restaurant just to the right, with a colourful, 70s-inspired fit out sourced almost entirely from op shops and Facebook Marketplace.
You won’t find a typical Thai menu here though, instead Thai Boi is all about northeastern Thai dishes based on the recipes of Joe’s own grandmother elevated to new heights, with a few signature Mekhong favourites making their way over too. Think kangaroo tartare served with puffed rice crackers and a zesty salad, slow-cooked lamb shank massaman curry and sticky rice for dessert.
Bonus, while the venue is licensed, with a short but sweet selection of wines and beers, you can also BYO should you prefer.
