  • Great for Dates

Walk down the fig-lined alleyway off Robertson Street in Fortitude Valley and you’ll come across a concealed brass door surrounded by vines. There's no sign to indicate what's inside but push the door open (careful, it swings both ways) and you'll find the The Nixon Room, a sophisticated bar from the team behind neighbouring Essa. Given that this secret lounge bar has no signs or windows, you have to know about it to find, but that's all part of the appeal. Sitting only 25 people at a time, it doesn’t get more exclusive than this.

If you manage to snag a seat in the tiny, dimly-lit space, you can cosy up on the leather lounges and order up creative snacks and endless cocktails. Martinis are the signature sip here, but you'll also find a handful of other concoctions as well as wines by the glass on the concise menu. And if the snacks just whet your appetite for more, you'll find Essa on the other side of a connecting door, with more Head Chef and co-owner Phil Marchant's inventive eats awaiting you.

Bonus, as of Sunday 7 May, the bar isn't just an ideal venue for Friday and Saturday nights—it's also a vibey, relaxed spot for a Sunday session. The newly launched Sunday Social Club kicks off every Sunday from 2pm until late, and newbies won't even have any trouble finding the place, with the door open to let the afternoon light in just for the occasion and the event spilling out in to the laneway (so this might be your chance to actually get a seat). With DJs playing vinyls to set the mood, the menu will feature American fast food-inspired snacks—think duck and waffles, griled cheese and kimchi sangas, stuffed chicken wings and hash browns stacked with raw beef, hot sauce and cheese. Of course, drinks will be in generous supply too, with cocktails by resident mixologist June. Check out their Instagram for details each week.
