Walk down the fig-lined alleyway off Robertson Street in Fortitude Valley and you’ll come across a concealed brass door surrounded by vines. There's no sign to indicate what's inside but push the door open (careful, it swings both ways) and you'll find the The Nixon Room, a sophisticated bar from the team behind neighbouring Essa. Given that this secret lounge bar has no signs or windows, you have to know about it to find, but that's all part of the appeal. Sitting only 25 people at a time, it doesn’t get more exclusive than this.
If you manage to snag a seat in the tiny, dimly-lit space, you can cosy up on the leather lounges and order up creative snacks and endless cocktails. Martinis are the signature sip here, but you'll also find a handful of other concoctions as well as wines by the glass on the concise menu. And if the snacks just whet your appetite for more, you'll find Essa on the other side of a connecting door, with more of Head Chef and co-owner Phil Marchant's inventive eats awaiting you.
The latest menu of bar bites might just have you sticking around though, with plates that include snacks of potato gems with cultured cream and caviar. stracciatella with tomatoes, basil and shios and nduja and honey on toast. More substantial plates come in the form of a fried duck sanga with black garlic mustard and truffle mayo, and baked brie served with honey and crumpets.
The Nixon Room crew also love shaking things up with special offers and their latest is a doozy—roll a six on a one of their dice before 6pm any evening and you won't pay for your food. No we're not kidding. Just ask the team for details next time you head in for a cocktail.
