The iconic South Brisbane venue that used to be home to Little Big House has just had a very British revamp, reopening as The Rose & Crown, a London-style pub in the heart of South Bank. The two story Queenslander nestled under the Emporium still features those expansive wrap-around balconies and breezy beer garden you know and love, but now the interiors will transport you straight to a homely British pub, featuring rustic mirrors, antique furnishings and an authentic menu to match.
Alex Derrick, the new operator behind the pub, spent 24 years running award-winning pubs across the UK before returning home to Queensland and deciding to bring us our own little slice of London life, with wife Bella Derrick, an interior stylist, giving the venue its new look. A key ingredient of any good London gastropub though is of course having traditional cask beer on tap—and you can find just that at The Rose & Crown, with brews from Birra Moretti, Brewdog, Magners, and even the creamiest pint this side of Dublin behind the bar.
On the food side of things, there’s all of your favourite British classics to choose from here, including a perfectly plated pile of English-style fish and chips complete with light and crispy batter, perfectly seasoned chips and mushy peas you’ll actually want to finish. A must-try is the Scotch egg, with its golden yolk and crisp exterior, but there’s also options like chicken liver parfait with apple chutney, potted crab with lemon butter and brioche, a braised steak and Guinness pie and Cumberland sausages with leeks, mash and gravy. The menu is set to change seasonally based on fresh and available produce so expect to see a range of rotating classics as well as some more unique dining alternatives.
Best of all, every Sunday they’ll be serving up a traditional Sunday Roast with all the trimmings, accompanied by live music in the beer garden. Plus, old regulars of Little Big House will be happy to know the karaoke room will be making a comeback better than ever in the coming weeks, as well as a weekly pub quiz night for all the trivia fanatics out there.
