Melbourne loves to make a big deal of things—think laneways and the Metro rail project—and fortunately for us, Christmas falls into that category of ‘things’. Kicking off at the end of the month is the City of Melbourne’s four-week-long Christmas Festival set to take over the city.
First up is the pièce de résistance, Christmas Square at Fed Square, which’ll be landmarked by the 17.5m Chrissy tree and sprawling festive wonderland complete with a First Nations style Koorie Krismas. While just nearby at Birrarung Marr, punters can find the Christmas Carnival fit for the whole family—rides, silly season carnival games and Christmas-themed food and drink.
And if you thought that’s already a lot of Christmas, Marvel Stadium is playing its part, transforming into the North Pole fitted out with Santa photography and footy team-themed trees. Plus the stunning Capitol Theatre will play host to a stack of Christmas flicks for most of December and it'll be home to the captivating bubble show.
The City of Melbourne Christmas Festival kicks off Friday 29 November with decorations popping up around the city in the coming weeks. And best of all, with the exception of a handful of events, most of the Christmas Festival is free.
