Remember The Crafty Squire on the corner of Russell and Little Collins? The iconic venue is set to reopen as Hickens Hotel, a name that nods back to its 1870s roots—and the legacy of British boxer and Aussie champ Ebenezer “Abe” Hicken, the venue’s original landlord.
Post-$6.5 million transformation, the four-level venue (yep, they’re adding an extra floor) will blend more than 160 years of history with a distinctly modern pub offering. We’re talking live sport, frosty brews, skyline views and a full kitchen lineup across multiple floors.
“Hickens will be the spot to go in the city,” says venue manager Giuseppe Lacava, “We’ve dialled in what makes a pub great and matched it with a nostalgic and playful personality.”
Keen for more of Melbourne's best pubs? Head this-a-way.
Downstairs, you’ll find The Carlton Lounge, a nostalgic 70s-style rumpus bar complete with Brewery Fresh Carlton Draught poured straight from copper tanks, pool tables and retro memorabilia.
The first floor will host a laidback restaurant and terrace for mid-week bites or a casual round (or two) with mates. The second level will be a go-to for live sport, arcade games, booths and LED screens—and right up the top will be their brand-new open-air rooftop, primed for knock-offs, golden hour cocktails and late night hangs.
We still don’t have a hard date yet for the opening but we’re assured they’ll be open this winter (hopefully with some heaters cranking) for all your mid-week lunch or pre and post-match beers.
Hickens Hotel can be found at 127 Russell Street at the former The Crafty Squire address. We’ll let you know a firm opening date and hours as soon as we can. For more info, hit their website.
