The obsession Melbourne has with Asian-style desserts cannot be stopped, and we couldn’t be happier about it. Homm, a dessert store that exemplifies all the things we love about Asian sweet treats, opened its doors to La Trobe Street earlier in 2023, and has now expanded to another two store fronts, located in Melbourne Central and Box Hill.
Husband and wife duo Bass Sakdatorn and Proud Saithai were missing the flavours of Thai sweet street food, so they married them to famous desserts hailing from neighbouring countries like Japan, Korea and Singapore.
Homm means “sweet smelling” in Thai, and they do their damn best to live up to the name. Traditional desserts like Korean Bingsu is given a welcome Thai twist, with a Thai tea base and topping like salted egg and taro. Shokupan, or Japanese milk bread, is coated with a thick layer of caramalised butter, sugar cured coconut, pumpkin boba and Kaya (coconut jam).
Exclusive to the Melbourne Central store, a Mochi Gelato menu is opening up, with flavours including Kati, which is a Thai coconut cream, pineapple, salted Kaya caramel, and strawberry cheese pie.
Everything at Homm is made from scratch, from the baked goods, the Kaya, to the toasted coconut crumble. Both local and Thai imported ingredient are used to create authentic flavours at Homm, which leaves no question as to why there have been lines going well down the street.
