Melbourne airport has officially revealed it will drop $4.5 billion on expanding its international terminal, to be done in stages over several years.

The news comes after a huge few months for Melbourne Airport. In fact, it’s been the busiest summer on record for international travel, with 1.26 million people international travellers processed.

With plans to extend check-in areas, add more gates and allow for extra flights, the expansion is no small feat, particularly while keeping Australia’s largest 24-hour international gateway open and operating. So, what does this mean for travellers? When does it start and when will it be done by?

To accommodate the growing number of passengers flying in and out of Melbourne Airport, there will to be a significant expansion of international check-in (promising high-tech and plenty of space), as well as extra baggage claim carousels.

In addition, five more gates will bring more choice when it comes to flight times, allowing airlines to add to their schedules. New aircraft stands will be able to accommodate five widebody or eight narrow body aircraft.

Drop Off And Pick Up Zones

New pick-up and drop-off zones in the T123 Transport Hub are set to open this September, meaning the international terminal can push out into the existing forecourt, creating plenty of room for the terminal's facelift.

What Else Is Coming?

Terminals are also getting more shops and better lounge facilities, but details on these are light at this stage, although we do know there will be more space for loved ones or mates eagerly waiting to give you that welcome home hug.

When Does The Build Start?

Early works on the first stage of the multi-billion dollar expansion start after Melbourne Airport’s new road network opens in September.

Melbourne Airport Chief Executive Officer Lorie Argus says talks with airlines have been underway for months to ensure plans meet their needs as well.

“Our investment in new infrastructure will deliver much needed extra capacity, but it is only part of the puzzle," Argus says.

“We’re keen to work with the federal government on upgrades to border processing technology and facilities to help further improve the arrivals experience.”

The multi-billion dollar expansion, done in phases, is expected to take several years, with hopes it will be wrapped by 2032.
