The Gaso Set To Make A Return As Live Music Venue Smith St Hotel

Thanks to chef and restaurateur Scott Pickett, one of Collingwood’s most beloved bandrooms has been given a second life.

The former Gasometer Hotel at 484 Smith Street long held a significant place in Melbourne’s live music scene, and when its closure was announced for March last year, it was a real punch in the guts for local. But now, the Gaso it set to be reborn as Smith St Hotel. 

Pickett might be better known for his restaurants (Longrain, Chancery Lane), but his acquisition of the Gaso was driven by something more personal than a business opportunity. Upon hearing that the site was at risk of being converted into apartments, he stepped in to prevent the iconic venue from facing the same fate as too many Melbourne music venues in recent years. His intention is continuity above all else, and to carry forward the spirit built by the Gasometer as a cornerstone of the neighbourhood and local music culture.

The New Smith St Hotel

Set to open soon, Smith St Hotel’s live music programme will be led by independent operators Yours and Owls, with a focus on emerging local artists and international touring acts in equal measure. 

By way of food, the menu leans into proper, no-frills pub territory: potato cakes with tarama, South Melbourne dim sims, parmas, steak nights, Longrain curry nights, and Sunday roasts. At the centre of the menu is Pickett’s already-famous Picko Roll, which you can kick back and enjoy by the fireplace in the front room. 

Pickett has been incredibly direct about what Smith St Hotel is (or isn't).

“Are we a gastropub? F**k no. We’re a live music venue, with great food and drinks," he says. 

When Does Smith St Hotel Open?

The Smith St Hotel team says the venue will open very soon. While they haven’t officially announced an opening date, they have dropped details on a stellar three-day Weekender launch party that kicks off on Friday 24 July, with tickets sitting at just $20 and $30.
