The Details

When it comes to Italian feeds in Melbourne, it’s safe to say, it’s a jungle out there. A delicious carb-loaded jungle filled with everything from arancini to zabaione.

With so little stomach space and so much to choose from, we are salivating with excitement to have found the oh-so delicioso 48h Pizza e Gnocchi Bar tucked away in Gordon Street, Elsternwick.

I don’t know about you guys, but they had us sold at the mere mention of “Gnocchi Bar” (and that’s before we even tried their mind-blowing food).

The OGs behind 48h are Fabio & Michele, who in 2015 opened their South Yarra restaurant and graced Melbournians with the delicious Italian food they were #blessed to have grown up with. Then two years and two million potatoes later, they extended their Italian gates of heaven to Elsternwick.

There is a LOT to love about this place, not only were they the first Gnocchi Bar in Australia (so you know they’re as legit as they come), these guys have a solid appreciation for quality ingredients. They source their organic produce from the Mornington Peninsula and other farming locations, as well as importing fully certified organic Italian products like sauces, flours and olive oils. So you know their dishes are going to taste juuuust like Nonna’s.

Among the authentic AF ingredients, we just can’t go passed their buffalo mozzarella, which is air-freighted straight from the motherland itself. Make sure to order the understated ‘Regina di Savoia dal 1889’ pizza with tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella and basil or opt for a classic ‘Insalata Caprese’ with buffalo mozzarella, fresh tomato and black Hawaiian salt.

It’s also worth a holler for our gluten-intolerant friends that their to-die-for menu also features gnocchi made with gluten-free flour AND their new gluten-free pizzas are made with hemp flour, that’s right, hemp flour! Plus, these guys just won silver at the 2018 Australian Pizza Championships for their gluten free pizza, making it Victoria's most delish GF pizza (winning!).

Their best seller? Mare Nostrum, a myriad of melted Mediterranian cheese baked in the oven with wild herbs. Yeah that's right, it's the Italian fondue of your dreams. 

We seriously feel like proud parents gushing over their children rn, but we thought it was our duty to let you guys know that they also host their very own cooking masterclasses at their South Yarra location. Das right. You can learn how to make gnocchi and pizza, just like they do at 48h! The best part? The class finishes with the best and only way how to finish a cooking class; you devouring a delish bowl of gnocchi and a class of vino.

If by the time you polish off your pizza/pasta combo you’re already wishing you had more, dw… there’s more. This gem of a restaurant also features a delicatessen where you can purchase the very products used in the 48h kitchen. We’re talkin’ cured meats, cheese, wine and other imported Italian delights. Your gals night cheese platter just went from 0 to 100, real quick.

Oh, and in case you were wondering about the name, 48 hours is how long it takes for pizza dough to rise to light, fluffy fragrant perfection.
