The Verdict

No doubt about it, this was the year of the sandwich shop. First, we got Big Dog’s Deli, then Hector’s Deli, and now Eastside, the CBD’s new American-style sandwich joint.

Eastside is the brainchild of hospo legend Matt Ward (Holla Food & Drink, Prospect Espresso, Townhouse and Mr Brownstone). The idea was to build a kickass sandwich bar, styled on the US-east coast sandwich scene. That means pastrami-stuffed Reubens that make you want to nap, Cubanos made from Meatsmith slow-roasted pork, and a slow-cooked lamb number we’re calling the God Sandwich.

Picture this: 12-hour, slow cooked lamb, oozey feta, a tangy mint and parsley pesto, all caught between two golden-buttered slices of La Madre potato & rosemary bread. Seriously, we gave an involuntary groan of pleasure on just opening the takeaway box...

Matt’s deliberately keeping the sandwich menu light and nimble. There's an HCT with a homemade béchamel (it’s the little things), but don’t expect an encyclopedic selection. This is quality, not quantity.

The coffee is These Days, a house blend roasted by Matt himself in a little Richmond warehouse, brewed to perfection by Margie and the Eastside baristas. The perfect mid-morning sandwich sipper.

And the fit-out? Dead cute. Pastel pink walls and fiddle leaf plants everywhere. The entrance itself kind of feels like a greenhouse. You can see starched CBD suits stopping as they walk past, poking their heads in to see what’s going on.

And when those heads smell that pulled lamb sandwich...the hearts and minds will follow.
