Sometimes, keeping it simple is for the best, and when it comes to Marion—Gertrude Street’s most beautiful, intimate wine bar—that certainly rings true. The petite space is owned by Andrew McConnell and has popped up right next to his Cutler & Co restaurant. Taking the guise of a slightly younger, more chill sister, Marion pairs light bites and larger plates with exquisite wines in a space that keeps things low-key but luxe.
While the open kitchen plates up dishes including grilled calamari, moreish steak tartare and a whole chicken that’s perfect for an afternoon’s grazing, wine is the main affair here. With a list that clocks well into the hundreds, you’re guaranteed to find something new amongst the varieties, which include natural wines. Going all out? There’s a hefty champagne and sparkling list to work your way through, including a couple of supersized bottles if you’re entertaining a crowd.
Marion might not have been around long, but it’s fast becoming our favourite spot for a glass of something indulgent. Hey, who can blame us?
