The Verdict

From the owner of Melbourne’s first tree-top yoga centre—Fauna Yoga—comes a South African dessert cafe whose main delicacy is an artisan doughnut like no other.

Ostrich & The Egg’s koeksisters are all handmade and pan-fried. The koeksisters’ yeast-based dough is powdered with a special combination of spices, then shallow pan fried, dipped in hot syrup, and finished with a sprinkle of dried coconut—what's not to like?

Ostrich & The Egg’s mission is to give its patrons a South African cuisine experience like no other, through an unmatchable variety of aromas, spices, and ingredients. The cafe is a family operated business and just opened doors last month in St Kilda after having grown from a small food truck operating around Melbourne for the past 15 months.

In addition to the koeksisters, Ostrich & The Egg’s kitchen brings other iconic South African flavours to the Australian palate, serving specialty coffee by RWS Speciality Coffee, organic loose leaf rooibos, green rooibos, and honeybush tea all imported from South Africa. You can also enjoy kombucha rooibos, malva pudding, a selection of 7 organic loose-leaf teas, seasonal fruit, and of course, one of South Africa’s most well-known exports: boerewors (South African sausages) served in a puff pastry scroll.

Ostrich & The Egg also anticipate being licensed in the near future, with a small selection of South African wines and beers.
