THE VERDICT

Gertrude Street is known to harbour some exquisite food and drink spots, and this leafy green hub is now home to yet another killer venue—Gertrude Hotel.

Picture everything you adore in Aussie pub culture, blended with Italian flavours and flare, and you’ve got this pub. Brought to you with a mission to emulate a space for sharing, laughs and great food, the Gertrude Hotel is the new love child of Andy Lockyear and Iza Dawkins.

Lockyear is not just co-owner of this cosy corner pub, he also wears the head chef hat, taking his time to work with local producers to give you a fresh and quality seasonal menu that truly understands its ingredients. With a reputable background in fine dining (Rockpool Bar & Grill), Lockyear is set to bring top-notch eats without breaking the bank.

Alongside beloved pub staples, the Gertrude Hotel is dishing up hand stretched pizzas, homemade pastas, and a cracking tiramisú. If you want to start things off right, we suggest the Sydney rock oysters or tantalising antipasti.

After traveling Italy with a desire to source recipes, art and inspiration, Dawkins formed the heart of this new adventure.

“Italian food is perfect for sharing… and the way Melburnians enjoy pubs these days is the same—join friends for a meal and a laugh. We feel like we are offering the best of both worlds,” said Dawkins.

The name Gertrude Hotel may ring familiar and it’s more than likely you’ve seen this iconic spot prior to its major modern European makeover. Black exterior with a pink and green lightning bolt is a hard sight to miss—but now you can look out for classic ivory walls with a simple touch of navy and some curbside dining underneath cedar trees.
