The Verdict

Marysville was one of the towns hit hard by the Black Saturday bushfires back in 2009, and it took a while for the place to rebuild.

These days, it’s a charming little spot in the Yarra Valley, tucked into the foothills beneath Lake Mountain Alpine Resort. Marysville is one of those regional towns that often gets spruiked as a ‘gateway’ to other regional towns. Which is kind of unfair—there’s a lot to like about this place.

If you’re looking for off-mountain accomm, our pick is this one. Vibe Hotel Marysville, est 2016. It’s part of the TFE Hotel Group, the guys behind Adina apartments. Obviously you’re not getting the boutique charm of a little family-owned B&B or anything, but if you’re looking for classy, modern accommodation in the Yarra Valley (that won’t cost you a kidney) this place is hard to beat.

Our room pick is the Woodland Balcony King. A little pricier than the basic twin room, but the better views and private balcony are worth the extra coin. You get squishy beds, an LCD TV with Foxtel, iPhone docking stations and the usual mini-bar treats. Lottery winners can feel free to upgrade to the Retreat Suites.

Vibe Marysville comes with some swish amenities: free WIFI, a wellness spa, gym, outdoor pool and Radius Bar & Grill. That’s the hotel restaurant, and they do some cracking seasonal dishes (with views over the sloping lawn and surrounding gardens).

Nearly everything on your plate has been sourced within 100km of the hotel—think wood-fired lamb, crisp pork belly with chilli caramel, and lemon + thyme chicken breast with crushed sweet potatoes. Not to mention amazing Yarra Valley plonk.

Really, with hotels like this, you shouldn’t be hanging indoors too much. There’s too much to do nearby. Marysville has some beautiful walking tracks (you can pick up a brochure Visitor Info Centre in town), there’s 30km of mountain bike trails to explore, and a drive along the famous Black Spur road is pretty much mandatory. Check out the Marysville website for more day trip ideas.

If you need us, we'll be by the pool pretending it's summertime.

This place might be 15 minutes from Tullamarine, but 'airport hotel' doesn't really seem appropriate. This is a $35m four-star regional estate, featuring a historic homestead, 250-person event space, 250-seat restaurant, vineyard and farmers' market, set on 1,100 beautiful acres.
