16 Tremendous Things To Do In Auckland This Weekend

Cheers to the freakin’ weekend! It’s that time of year again with school holidays in full swing—although that might send a shiver down your spine or has you letting out an exasperated groan, we’ve got you covered to entertain the kids… or to stay away from ‘em! Whether you’re looking to keep the little humans or yourself (or both!) entertained, Auckland has you covered with a ridiculously good line-up of events this weekend.

It’s also time to celebrate in full French flair for Bastille Day this weekend through events filled with wine, food, movies and a French street festival! You’ve also got a circus, a cult-favourite-turned-puppet show, a glamorous winter party, and even an in-depth look at Pablo Escobar’s takedown (calling all “Narcos” fans!) all coming at you so get ready for a big one, at all these wonderful events across Auckland.

All Weekend

My Dead Best Friend | 12 July—22 July

A comedy about death, revolution, unfulfilled love and a possum set in December 1998, Dunedin. This true story about heartbreaking grief and enduring friendship is a joyful comedy from a heavy heart, featuring a soundtrack from The Verlaines to The Backstreet Boys, and words from Tuwhare, Baxter and Bishop. First performed in 2016 at Perth Fringe World at the prestigious Blue Room Theatre, it boldly takes its place at Q Theatre in July.

2017 World Press Photo Exhibition

The world’s greatest photo exhibition hits Auckland! This traveling exhibition, incredibly unique in its kind, is the result of a worldwide annual contest on press photography. No doubt you’ll have seen some of the iconic photos sprawled across your Facebook newsfeed like Johnathan Bachman’s “Taking a Stand in Baton Rogue” and Usain Bolt in Kai Oliver Pfaffenbach’s “Rio’s Golden Smile”—now you can see them and more up close and personal! Plus, proceeds from the entry fees will also be donated to charity!

Cirque Grande

It’s a circus like you’ve never seen it! On it’s very first tour of New Zealand, this brand new show is ready to make you laugh, gasp, scream and clap profusely as you watch the talented artists swing, dance, ride and so much more. Their award-winning bicycle act sees 12 (!) girls on a single bike performing tricks that combine aerobics, gymnastics, riding and dance. The phenomenal African acrobats will also take your breath away with their gravity-defying performances.

David Attenborough’s Zoo Quest Screening | 8 July—23 July

Watch the very best of David Attenborough’s early Zoo Quest TV adventures seen like never before—in high-definition colour. Bringing with them is the remarkable story of how the pioneering television series was made, which completely changed how viewers saw the world. Using the newly found colour film matched with new behind-the-scenes stories from David Attenvorough and cameraman Charles Lagus showcases the very best of the series.

Puppet Fiction

Everybody be cool! This is a f**king puppet show! Three actors, 25 marionettes and one batshit crazy show. In this ultimate Tarantino homage, it's Pulp Fiction… with strings attached. The award-winning cult show full with miniature puppet mayhem returns to Auckland for the first time in four years. You better get in quick ‘cause these are the last couple show days! Puppet Fiction combines the youthful joy of live puppetry, an iconic piece of pop culture and a star-studded team working hard behind it (literally!)—making for a very interesting and hilarious night out!

The Road That Wasn’t There

This is a story about a girl who followed the map to the edge of the world…. She finds herself in a paper world after straying from the beaten track. Although it might first appear like a land of possibility, she soon finds out that what she does here might have frighteningly real consequences. From the multi-award winning company Trick of the Light comes a magical production combining shadow play, live music and puppetry, this original fairytale is reminiscent of the late and great Margaret Mahy. This is one hell of an adventure perfect for curious kids and intrepid adults.

Mouton Cadet Winemakers Dinner

This is a Bastille Day celebration that will speak to your stomach! As part of this year’s Chef Series, Regatta Bar and Eatery is collaborating with guest winery all the way from France, Mouton Cadet. This six-course degustation expertly matches exquisite meals with equally stunning wines, for a night full of French flair. Think dishes like garlic and parsley escargot, turbot and market oyster, wild-shot venison and a crème caramel to top it all off!

Bastille Day French Films

Two captivating French films will be taking over Flicks Cinema in the Lopdell Theatre for Bastille Day. The first is French drama In Harmony, follows equestrian rider Albert Dupontel that finds himself wheelchair-bound after an accident, as he battles his insurance company and case officer Florence for a fair payout—what he receives is much further from his expectations. The second, A Bag of Marbles is based on the famous and acclaimed memoirs of Joseph Joffo following two young Jewish boys living in France at the height of World War II. When Joffo was 10 years old, his father gave him and his brother Maurice some money and a map, sending them on a dangerous mission to escape Nazi-occupied Paris in 1941.

Highlife Winter Social

The team that brings us one of the coolest R21 New Year’s experiences is back for the winter season. The Winter Social makes returns to its home at The Wharf for Auckland’s premier winter party! Bastille Day Street Festival

The well-loved Remuera Bastille Day Street Festival is back and better than ever! Offering a fabulous mix of French fun, watch artist and illustrator Misery paint one of her iconic characters live, join Jaques Costeau in his travelling photobooth, Opera Factory will be presenting musical highlights from Les Miserables, bring your furry friend to partake in or watch the poodle parade, help create an underwater reef at Remuera Library and so much more! Crepes, croque monsieur and croissants are just a taste of the French delicacies on offer.

Kaukapakapa Village Market

As Aucklanders, we know markets and Sunday morning is a match made in heaven. Get up bright and early for this wonderful market with countless stalls of locally produced crafts, fresh ground coffee (an essential!), handmade soaps, baking, natural skin care and so much more. There’ll also be live music from Jessica and Jamie, barista coffee and exhibitions throughout the hall!

The Body Laid Bare: Masterpieces from Tate

It's your very last chance to see masterpieces from artists such as Picasso, Matisse and Rodin right in the flesh, so get in quick. Auckland Art Gallery presents to visitors masterpieces from all four Tate Museums all under one roof, providing an experience that's not normally seen—even in England! This major exhibition tells the story of the nude in Western art over the last two centuries, and will not be extended as it will leave for Seoul, South Korea after closing this weekend. Trace artists' captivation with the human body in this beautiful exhibition, complemented with an array of activities including figure drawing, free films, talks, and tours.
