18 Super-Duper Things To Do In Auckland This Weekend

It may be the season for thick layers and big ol’ jumpers, but Auckland has (finally) decided to grace us with warm, sunny days and we’re totally not complaining. Even better, the shorter week means the weekend has rolled right back ‘round again!

You know what that means—it’s time for you to get to a whole lotta Auckland events you just can’t miss. There’s truly something for everyone this weekend from a mindfulness festival, crafty markets, to an American diner night, and even a vegan food fair! So get your thinking hats on, it’s time to plan another out-of-this-world weekend in this beautiful city of ours!

All Weekend


Set in a rugby changing room, New Zealand landmark play 'Foreskin’s Lament' is welcomed back with a modern twist. Taking centre stage during the Here & Now Festival 2017, this locker-room play questions the state of the nation on masculinity. Intertwined with all of the contemporary references for you to pick up on, ask yourself “what has changed since 1980?” or moreover, “what hasn’t?”.

View some rarely seen footage from the Western Front from World War I under the stars, as they get projected onto the Auckland Museum. There’ll also be footage from the first ever conscription ballot take place, as well as work of the medical corps and, even video from an All Blacks rugby game playing France during wartime.

The Jungle Book

You’ve seen it at the movies, now it’s time to see it live! Ruyard Kipling’s classic comes to life for an epic journey through the jungle in this TheatreWorks production. Adapted and directed by Jason Moffatt, see all the well-loved characters in this fabulous production—Mowgli, Bagheera, Baloo and the lot!

Dance Like Everybody’s Watching

Just be yourself… but only when nobody’s watching. In this day and age, everybody’s watching—devised theatre maker Alice Canton is playing on exactly that. Taking place all over the ASB Waterfront Theatre for Here & Now Festival 2017, this playful, funny and surprising work will challenge your social assumptions and leave you dancing (even when everybody’s watching!).

Street Food at Point Chevalier

Ring in the weekend in one of our fave ways—with fabulous food, of course! Treat your end-of-week belly with Japanese dumplings, gourmet schnitzel sandwiches, melted cheese wheels, French sweet pastries and so much more! Matt Montez Duo will be joining in on the fun to provide some stellar live music before they head off to Europe, too!

Even the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall have experienced the legendary Dance-O-Mat, now it’s your turn! Originally developed in post-quake Christchurch to make use of the vacant space, delight in the professional-standard sprung dance floor that comes alive when you plug in your music! Dust off your dancing shoes at this free interactive event, and get ready to shimmy, strut and shake your stuff!

Alexandra Park Presents: American Night

It’s so easy to find yourself dreaming of the indulgent All-American diner experiences we see in the movies, right? Dream no more! Head down to Alexandra Park for their American Night, serving up an all-you-can-eat diner-inspired buffet. Get ready for build-your-own burgers, smoked brisket, jalapeno cornbread, and all of the crazy sweet pies you thought only existed in your dreams (Maple Pumpkin Pie, we’re thinking of you)! It wouldn’t be the races without some horse action, so there’ll also be two American Mile style races to top it all off!

Comedy Cocktail Class

Pretty much the best way ever to get ready for the International Comedy Festival and the shenanigans to come, get your laugh on early and a handle on basic cocktail making with Q Theatre’s very own cocktail savant and bar manager, Jade Beckhouse! He won’t be doing it alone though, and will be joined by Billy T Award winning “powerhouse of New Zealand comedy” David Correros! A (boozy) night of cocktail education and entertainment, taste some fabulous past, present and future concoctions on the Q Bar menu, and get all the insider intel about what goes into making a cocktail from scratch. Try not to spill your drink from laughing too hard!

We all experience life, love and living through Mouth, Tongue and Teeth, and these guys know exactly how to communicate it. Join Niu Wave Collective, a group of the most exciting up-and-coming Spoken Word Artists, in this spoken word show about ancestral teeth and lost mother tongues. Through their lived experiences, they create a unique art, and this group of young artists are ready to envelop you in wonder and excitement as part of this year’s Here & Now Festival.

Aquarium After Dark

Ever wondered what the penguins do once aquarium shuts its doors for the day? You’re not alone, and now you can stop your wondering! Kelly Tarlton’s SEA LIFE Aquarium invites you to this exclusive event to watch the penguins settle in for the night under an Antarctic sunset. Learn how they take care of the penguins during the change of seasons and what the penguins and penguin keepers get up to all day! Just in time for World Penguin Day on the 25th, your ticket also comes with a penguin for you to take home (may or may not be a plush), and a penguin photo!
