21 Fabulous Things To Do In Auckland this October

Where has the year gone?! If you’re anything like us and struggling to keep up with the time flying past our eyes, it’s time to grab this year by the er, months, and make the most of it! We’re not even sure you’re prepared for what this month has in store for you—it’s one of the best yet!

With more expos, festivals, and events than you can poke a stick at, there’s something for everyone this month. For the wine-obsessed, pet lovers, artists, beer-drinkers, fiancés, cinephiles and more—this month is ready for you. The question is, are you ready for it?

Jam-packed with awesomeness all month long, right from the very first day to the very last, October is looking a little spectacular. You’ve done it again, Auckland!

Auckland Animal And Pet Expo | 1 October 

Kick off your month with your best friend fur-ever (sorry) at the Animal and Pet Expo at the ASB Showgrounds. The happiest show around, expect everything from the cute and cuddly, fluffy and famous to the wacky and wonderful. There will be hunderds of the latest pet products, show only specials and free samples, your furry best friend is about to be one happy camper. Pet-less pet lovers aren’t excluded, there will be creatures great and small on show—puppies, kittens, birds, rabbits, turtles and chinchillas to name a few!

Festival Italiano 2017 | 1 October

The largest Italian Festival in New Zealand is back in Newmarket and bigger than ever! Covering four streets over Newmarket, Festival Italiano brings al fresco restaurants, an Italian market with more than 40 exhibitors, live music, exhibits, Italian cars and bikes and so much more! If that’s not enough, you can even be in to win a trip to two to Italy with the Dante Raffle.

Cazador X Sawmill | 2 October and 4 October

Sustainable cooking legends and craft brew masters Cazador and Sawmill are hosting two collaborative dinners hosted at their respective digs in Auckland and Matakana. Chef Dariush Lolaiy and Will Michell have put together a one-of-a-kind five-course dinner matched to five unique Sawmill brews for two scrumptious nights.

The Truck Stop | 5 October 

Back and better than ever, the show just keeps going with The Truck Stop! Kicking off at La Cigale, this is one night of amazing street food and live music you won’t wanna miss. Auckland’s best food trucks will be parked outside, heaters cranking, the bar pouring and lots of seating to find a pozzy for the night. La Cigale will also have loads of yummy market food on offer. There’s plenty of free parking and free entry—two of us Aucklander’s favourite phrases!

Oktoberfest | 7 October 

Forget making your way all the way over to Munich, Oktoberfest is coming to you! The Shakespeare is getting ready for its annual Oktoberfest celebrations and you’re invited! Expect live music, a delicious German menu, crazy costumes and a whole load of beer! Strap on your lederhosen’s and get ready to par-tay! Your $12 ticket even gets you a stein glass to take home—we trust you’ll remember it at the end of the night!

Artweek Auckland | 7 October—15 October

An artistic explosion takes over the City of Sails for Artweek Auckland! This ten day festival is taking place over ten Auckland precincts, showcasing Auckland’s diverse art world. Set in public to private spaces, pop-ups, streets and everything in between, you haven’t seen art like this before. Whereever you are during these ten days in Auckland, you’re bound to find a special art piece to make you laugh, smile and think.

The Navigators | 6 October—8 October 

Three artists, three visions and three bold stories come together at The Navigators—a festival-style weekend inviting you into the director’s imagination as they take thieir first steps into creating a new piece of work. Catch Moon by Malia Johnston, a dance-theatre piece inspired by the night sky as a place of dreams and imaginings. Created and directed by Kate Parker, The Wild Seed Thief is an original environmental fable featuring stunning visual imagery. Katie Wolfe creates and directs The Haka Party Incident, a documentary theatre based on an event that changed race relations in Aotearoa forever—a violent stoush between the University of Auckland engineering students preparing for their annual mock haka down Queen Street and activist group Te Taua. Each director invites your voices and responses and take part in the development of these new, moving works.

Matakana Oyster & Wine Festival 2017 | 8 October 

Celebrate the peak of the local oyster season at the Matakana Oyster & Wine Festival—a match made in heaven, we say! Seven farmers from the Mahurangi Harbour will servce their plump and delicious oysters, accompanied by local wines and even more seafood! Your ticket includes an event wine glass to take home, your first glass of wine or beer and two half shell oysters—all for $35 a ticket!

Duffy and Global Girl Save the World! | 10 October—12 October 

Charitable foundation Duffy Books in Homes provides more than 100,000 books to New Zealand children three times a year, and they’re presenting an entertaining show to inspire children and protect our environment for future generations! It’s an unusually hot summer so Duffy heads for the shade under a tree with books in hand. Millicent a.k.a Global Girl crashes into her from the sky, and arrives in earth to help humans solve the problems caused by climate change. Global Girl has some challenges saving the world because she lives with dyslexia—luckily Duffy is here to help and work together to fight climate change. Featuring exciting science experiments and puppetry, this show for 5 to 12 year olds is just as entertaining as it is educational!

Euro Spring Series: Lunch with Pip and Nat Cheshire | 12 October 

Celebrate the arrival of spring with the Euro Spring Series over an unmissable lunch. This time round, father-and-son duo Pip and Nat Cheshire will share their experience in shaping the city’s aesthetic with HOME magazine editor Simon Farrell-Green. Cheshire Architects has had a hand in developing some of Auckland’s most iconic precincts, including Britomart, City Works Depot, Beirut, Saan, Oaken, as well as so much more. Your ticket includes a cocktail on arrival and a scrumptious seasonal three-course lunch.

Follow Your Arrow | 12 October

The three Auckland Goode Brothers venues are showcasing the best of Italian cuisine from a different reason—time for a restaurant crawl, we say! Botany embraces Rome, NorthWest and New Lynn say “ciao!” to Genoa and Napoli cuisine. That’s not all—you’re not too late for NorthWest’s Winemaker Dinner, Botany’s Prosecco Evening, or the NZ vs Italian Wine and Cheese Tasting at New Lynn! You could even be in the chance to win a trip to Florence for two—though you might already feel like you’re in Italy at this rate!

City Of Ales | 14 October 

With more than 24 individual beers matched with a fantastic menu, City of Ales is ready to showcase the best of what Auckland has to offer. The Supergroove horn section will be stomping around with a very special guest, multi-instrumentalist Finn Scholes—arguably the finest trumpet player in the country. Expect some crazy craft brews as well as all the craft staples! Your ticket already includes two beer tokens to get you started, as well as some beer snacks to get you through your tasting session!

Soljans Wedding Expo | 14 October 

If you got a ring on it, this one’s for you! Soljan’s Estate Winery in Kumeu is inviting you to their stunning and unique wedding ceremony and reception venue at their 2017 Wedding Expo. Live Well Festival | 14 October—15 October 

All about healthy lifestyles, fitness, nutrition, wellbeing and happiness, the Live Well Festival is all about giving back to your health and body. The Power Stage will host experts in lifestyle and wellbeing and The Hits Fitness Studio will have fitness classes going all day. Even the little ones will be kept well entertained at the Kids Zone with kids cooking classes, colouring and games. Waiheke Island Of Wine Expo 2017 | 17 October 

Waiheke and wine go hand in hand, and the Waiheke Island of Wine Expo 2017 is showing us what they’re made of! If you haven’t quite made it to a Waiheke winery quite yet this year, don’t worry—they’re coming to us! Sixteen of Waiheke Island’s top wineries showcase more than 90 artisan wines all under one roof in Auckland. All handcrafted just across the water, this Island of Wine means business. The winemakers and owners themselves will also be there to chat with visitors and offer the exclusive chance to be amongst the very first to sample the lastest releases. Wineries include Cable Bay, Goldie Wines, Peacock Sky, Poderi Crisci, Man O’ War, Te Motu and more!

Auckland Better Home and Living Show 2017 | 27 October—29 October 

Is home needing a bit of a Spring spruce up? Packed with hundreds of products and ideas for your home, the Auckland Better Home and Living Show is true #interiorporn. Filled with sustainable ideas for you're the indoors and out, massive show-only specials, free seminars, this is a must-see event for home and lifestyle lovers! Making its home at the North Shore Events Centre, spice up your home beyond Kmart goodies (we still love ‘em, don’t worry!) and make your house a home.

The Very Vintage Day Out | 28 October—29 October 

Lovers of all things rejoice! Come together at Shed 10 to celebrate an era of yesteryear with all day entertainment, high tea, and shopping at The Very Vintage Day Out. Performers from all around the country will be entertaining you with all types of dancing and music. They’ll even be crowning Miss Pinup New Zealand, and you’re encouraged to get into the spirit of the day and dress up for some spot prizes and photo ops! Take the perf #gram in front of all the vintage cars and enjoy all of the goodness!

Whips N Spurs | 28 October

If you’re all about cocktails and good times (you are), head to Ellerslie Racecourse on the last weekend of the month. Whips n Spurs kicks off the racing season in epic style with an all-day party not to be missed. Expect Champagne and cocktails, live music and a mouth-watering Vietnamese street food pop-up. Show Me Shorts | Launching 28 October 

The 12th Edition of the Show Me Shorts Festival is taking place in more than 20 cinemas around the nation! Seven Auckland cinemas take part in this special festival, celebrating international and domestic short films. This is New Zealand’s first Academy Awards Accredited Festival and the first film festival in the country to achieve it! Keep an eye out for the program, these films may be small but they sure will pack a punch!

Inspired By Japan | 29 October 

Celebrate great food, sake and wine with head chefs Yukio Ozeki (Azabu), Makoto Tokuyama (Cocoro), Kazuya Yamauchi (Kazuya) and Nic Watt (MASU) at Inspired by Japan, touching down at Skycity’s MASU. Each chef will create a dish that defines their unique style, personality and background. Raising awareness of Japanese influenced cuisine in New Zealand beyond your usual sushi, tempura and teriyaki, see Japanese food in a new light. This four course experience is all matched with sake and wine, and it’s not to be missed!

NZ Syrah Symposium Tasting | 31 October 

New Zealand has made its name on the map for Syrah wines—even Aussie producers are jealous of our cooler climate! Aromatic, bright, powerful and dense are just some of the words to describe this wonderful drop, and get a taste of it at the NZ Syrah Symposium Tasting at Caros in Parnell. Rumour has it that our Syrah is even giving the French classics a run for their money! Both our established legends and relative newcomers are making some of the best in the world—and winemakers are indulging you at this informal drop-in event. Some wineries include Bilanica, Craggy Range, Fromm, Elephant Hill, Goldie, and Trinity Hill to name just a few!
